And for everyone else, how often do they do this finger printing? Why is it such a big deal?
As always, the first place to go for info about how Japan is giving stick to its foreign residents and visitors is:
http://www.debito.org
He's been covering the story pretty heavily. Pretty much the gist is that all foreigners (including permanent residents, people married to citizens, people there on valid temporary visas, etc) have to be photographed and fingerprinted when entering or re-entering Japan now. As an attempt to crack down on the ominous specter of gaijin crime and terrorism, of course ::kisaki::

I've read no to little difference in greater or lesser degree of plausible reasons anywhere else in this thread.

For me, it's all about the Asian boys in makeup and anime, all in good faith. \o^.^o/

You could figuratively or literally beat me with a stick all you like, but it'd do nothing for keening me any more so on taping my eyes back and flying over midway across the world for throwing myself at whoever there's just as pitiful enough to actually marry me. :P

I didn't quite understand that but it seemed kinda.....not relevant.

It does remind me of something else that bothers me about Japan though; the Japanese idea of sexy is plain weird to me.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=H-nF01ZYHZE (minors don't click, hm?)

They're like that in anime and movies too, even though this is supposed to be a joke video.
I'm not suggesting that Victoria's Secret models are any better, but that's just annoying (imo).

Run Toshi, run

Fashion you can get anywhere, hot people too ...it's the culture where you can't get anywhere else. You can't take out Japanese culture (and subculture?) out of Japanand place it somewhere else, so I feel that that's why culture is important. Sure you can emulate it, but to what extent would it be genuine?

Hmm, well first of all I have little to no desire in actually living in Japan. I guess for a short time I wouldn't mind it, just to have the experience (a year at most).

If I ever was to live there however, it'd probably be for the easy accessibility to the entertainment I enjoy (VK and the like). I suppose fashion pays a small role, as well. Though, I have to emphasize small because I highly doubt I could afford much of anything in that department there.

EDIT: Thinking about it, another big reason for the experience of living there for a period of time would be for inspirational purposes. Basically, to inspire my artwork. I think I'd like that.

I was really torn between the fashion (shopping) and culture, but ultimately ended up choosing the fashion since the culture seemed a bit to all-encompassing. It's all so fascinating... *_*

Hmm I am learning the Japanese language (at the moment I am horrible but many of the people in my course are actually second year students who repeat the first year twice so I guess the University is very hard).

I would love to go to Japan because I have a lot of friends there. I love the Japanaese Culture and I want a Job as editor, screenwriter or Journalist there if it is possible. Oh yes and I have to discuss some issues with a Japanese boy who is half my boyfriends ::kisaki::

Well the only reason I would even consider living there is the fashion aka shopping. I'm interested in the culture and I'm slowly learning the language but I don't think I'd be happy living in Japan because of the strict society rules and all that :P

"Hi, how are you? I give good *blah*" I came across this a while ago, it was too funny.

I picked culture, because that is my main reason honestly.
