Yes, 2009 is coming to a close. There's already a thread for the best of 2009, but it's also the end of a decade.

People will look back upon the past decade and it's pop culture and I can't help but wonder what things will represent this decade, like The Beatles, Hippies, & psychedelic drugs define the sixties (even though most of those things only truly define the late 60s), and like Marijuana, Political hardships, and gas shortages define the 70s.

So, what has been the best music for you that's been released these past 10 years?

(I'll post my opinions in a later post.)

edit: added ('00s) since we're no longer in that decade. :| It's weird really.

Oh boy . . .
Well, for starters, Malice Mizer's breakup and the members' projects all happened in this decade! ::k::
Things like Moi dix Mois and Kozi's solo project are things I like . . .
I also enjoy some newer bands like Nightmare, Exist†Trace, Ayria, I:Scintilla and many industrial groups . . .
Although they definitely do not necessarily define the music of the decade.
People will probably remember the increase of filesharing/the internet's involvement in music as well as music becoming even more ubiquitous and chameleon-like in pop culture.

What do we call this decade LOL? The 00s? I'll write more when I get home (on the bus) but I think the internet has played a big part in this decade.

somewhere except here... ok, a clue... Mexico
i think i would call it synth/electro/industrial decade.

just because i don't really want to pay attention to the western obsession with the so called "indie rock" bands. Which i only like the strokes! hehe

yeah, that's really not the mainstream though. it's a substream and when future generations read about this time period they'll be reading about brittney spears and her breakdowns and not dope ass underground parties

Best bands/artists of the decade(In no order--also, some of these bands started before the 2000s, but continued activity well into this decade):

Deerhoof
MGMT
Capsule
CocoRosie
Deadman
Justice
Joanna Newsom
Deathgaze
Dir en Grey
Közi
Lady Gaga

Worst events of the decade, musically:

Malice Mizer officially goes on "hiatus" - 2001
Cibo Matto disbands - 2001
George Harrison dies - 2001
American Idol debuts - 2002
Michael Jackson dies - 2009
Jasmine You dies - 2009

There's probably more I'll add later. So much to cover.

No. 1980 is the first year of the 80s, not the last year of the 70s.

It works like this:
First year of the 80s - 1980
Second year of the 80s - 1981
Third year of the 80s - 1982
.
.
.
Tenth year of the 80s - 1989

And then 1990 is the first of the 90s.
So you can see that the decade of the 00s (otherwise known as the noughties) began in 2000 and finishes right at the end of 2009.

Anyway;
Band of the decade: Boris (and to think I've only heard 6 of the 19 they released this decade).
Artist of the decade: Rowland S. Howard (yes, he only did two albums, but both of them are amazingly good).

Album of the decade countdown:

5. Ed Kuepper - Jean Lee and the Yellow Dog
4. Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
3. Boris - Feedbacker
2. Rowland S. Howard - Teenage Snuff Film
1. Boris - Smile

Worst events of the decade:
Syd Barrett dies (yes, I know he hadn't been Syd since 1971 or so, but still)
Rowland S. Howard reveals he has liver cancer and his health is very poor.

Best:
Moi dix Mois
Qntal/Estampie
Lacrimosa (pre-Sehnsucht)
Ataraxia
Welle:Erdball
The rise of EBM and medieval music in western gothic music
The rise of sites like Myspace and Youtube, allowing bands to build fan bases without record labels

Worst:
Malice Mizer splitting up
Lareine splitting up
The rise of neo-VK and oshare kei
The increasing homogenisation and dumbing-down of popular music due to record companies seeking to recoup increasingly large marketing budgets and therefore playing it safe

^^That last one has been going on for decades, though. It isn't really unique to our generation.

And Lady GaGa, from this decade, is really breaking that mold! We've got a game changer, finally.

Exactly.
For example, 2001 signifies that we've been living in the 2000s for 1 whole year. on new years we'll have lived in the 2000s for 10 years, not nine. That's a decade.

Year numbers signify the years that HAVE ALREADY GONE BY. Not the year that is going by. ;)

It's pretty impossible to tell this early how this decade will be remembered (music-wise in particular). Living through the 90's. I had no idea at the time that it would end up being considered the grunge decade. You don't realize the importance of most movements until much later.

Although, as others have said, I have to assume that the internet's role in the music industry will be a big part of how we look at this decade.

The way we listen to music has changed so drastically - the ease of access to new music, the ease of discovering new bands (including foreign music) - it's mind-boggling.

SEMI-ANNUAL OLD PERSON RANT ::ash:: :

When I was most of your guys' ages, it was extremely difficult to find out about new, non-mainstream bands. And forget about foreign stuff. I had to read music magazines and look at the descriptions of bands and just go out and buy the cassettes based on that alone, praying they would be good, because if not, I'd have to save my allowance up for another few weeks or a month until I could buy another tape. Because of the cost factor and the inability to sample things* before buying, most of us couldn't name off 10 million different bands we loved and we'd probably only hear a dozen or so new albums in an entire year. Basically, what I'm saying is that you guys have no idea how good you've got it now.

*although this isn't completely true because MTV still used to play videos back then, so you could hear new stuff that way. But you still couldn't just go download it. You'd have to hope your parents would buy it for you for Christmas 6 months later or like starve yourself at school and save up your lunch money or something.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Every once in a while you get an artist who is commercial enough to reassure the record companies that they will earn enough money and original enough to still stand out, like David Bowie or Michael Jackson, or who is causing such a stir that the record companies feel they have to sign them no matter what, like the Sex Pistols, and some of them managed to shake things up for a while, but in the end not much has changed.

I don't think Lady Gay Gay should be roped in with this decade. She really, really hit it big at the end of this year, so most of what she'll do, mainstream wise will be in the 10s

that being said, the best music of the decade is Paris by Paris Hilton. No contest.
