Git offa mah property!
You get off of MINE, you... liberal otter.

Kind of random, but I was watching some 9/11 footage and it's hard to believe that the places I normally go to were once covered with smoke, debris, and people running and screaming. So much of Manhattan was just covered with huge clouds of smoke and debris from the towers collapsing. Just for the way NYC has recovered, even constructing the new building, makes me appreciate the city more. I see it all the time, every day, how it's become strong again. I've had so many great and interesting experiences in NYC, pretty much every day, and I feel really lucky to be able to study and live here! ^^

And I got my first massage yesterday, oh my gosh! I'm hooked. Apparently my university has this whole relaxation center that gives massages and things like that, spaces to lie down and listen to music, I'm definitely going~ ::batsu::

In terms of body language, yeah, easily. In terms of being factual, not even a little bit.

But we all know what matters more to the American public.

I went up to Boston to see a book sale, but they CHANGED THE DATE since last time I checked it, and so I'm up here for nothing ::hora:: XD
On the plus side, I'll go and see "Macbeth" tonight as long as I'm up here.

That's what I thought four years ago ::gaku:: He should've brought out the Greek columns again. (oh snapples XD)
But yeah, even my die-hard Obama friends were disappointed. I know you shouldn't base your decision on superficial things, but they do make an impression (for example, Abraham Lincoln!). I've been kind of undecided on the whole election myself, especially after I went to this Latino vote event in the city last week that had some awesome speakers. The general feeling was of disenchantment/ambivalence and they were basically doing the "pick the lesser of the two evils" thing (I wouldn't use the term 'evils' but you know what I mean). It was kind of depressing and frustrating.

Speaking of politics, I read in this book, which is pretty excellent ("Wealth and Democracy" by Kevin Phillips) : "Thomas Jefferson labeled financially-attuned Manhattan 'Hamiltonople'"

AHAHAHAHAHA... "Hamiltonople" XD Ahem. *Alexander Hamilton fangirl* ::batsu::

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/20 ... alist-hunk
OMG XDDD

But it’s not just his brilliant political mind that has seduced people. Hamilton was a slender, fair-skinned, auburn-haired man with a chiseled jaw and azure eyes so alluring that Massachusetts representative Fisher Ames once called them “eminently beautiful.” Henry Cabot Lodge described him as “very attractive,” while a flustered Abigail Adams once wrote to her husband that Hamilton represented “lasciviousness itself.” Or, as a woman named Breanna Lynn more recently put it on Facebook (FB), “I’d tap that.”

Lynn posted this message on the Facebook group “Alexander Hamilton Was the Foxiest of the Federalists,” just one of a string of Hamilton fan pages that have cropped up on the social network. Others have names such as: “I love Alexander Hamilton,” “Alexander Hamilton … The Hotness Never Dies,” “Are you Treasurer Sexy?” and “Alexander Hamilton: Too Hot For Your Wallet.” There are Tumblrs, Twitter accounts, and fan fiction communities dedicated to the patron saint of Wall Street. A year ago, Rod Blagojevich admitted to having “a man crush” on him.
This article isn't bad at all, I'm actually learning about him @_@

OK, last silly quote:
He was also deeply flawed—in a cool, brooding, James Dean kind of way. Hamilton developed a reputation as a prolific and unforgiving polemicist, and he never learned to pull his punches, earning as many enemies as he did followers. An affair with a married woman—whose husband successfully blackmailed Hamilton, who was also married—nearly ruined his career. Jefferson disliked him. Adams downright despised him. And after enduring a series of private and public insults, Aaron Burr killed him.

“He was sort of the bad-boy alternative to the Washingtons and Jeffersons in history class,” says Julia Cooperman, 22, a recent graduate of University of Southern California and a “Foxiest of the Federalists” Facebook group member. Cooperman says her Hamilton infatuation began in eighth grade. While other girls fawned over Zac Efron or the Jonas Brothers, she founded an after-school club called the Hamiltonians, where she and her friends discussed 18th century American history—and gushed over how cute Alexander Hamilton was. “We had a Mister Hamiltonian Pageant, where we made the four guys in the club compete to see who most embodied the Hamiltonian ideal,” she says. In other words, who looked the best in a wig.
OMG SHE IS AWESOME.

EDIT: There's even a journal article by a professor about his uh, sexiness. The Erotic Charisma of Alexander Hamilton.

I think I'm becoming French. I just had my first tirade at work XD

But my god does that dude piss me off :P
He had some knitpicky suggestions to make on a PPT my group made so he included the head of Operations, his manager, some other dude, the head of development and god knows who else.

I finally asked him why he didn't just email me directly, and if he was really trying to draw attention to what he saw as a lack of quality in the work. If he is god help him, because he has yet to do anything I find of value in the past year I've worked with him.

BLARGHUEFHEZUFZ. Hmph.

EDT: lol. And there I go again

When I was working at Barnes and Nobel, I saw a coworker sit back and intentionally unravel an entire roll of discount stickers... I told him I'd clean it up and he should do something else and then he said he had it under control and spent the next half hour or so cleaning up the mess he made. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is NOT the recommended way to make work for yourself ::firedevil::

Gee, ya think "not even a little bit" is just a little bit of an exaggeration? And just his body language, huh? He wasn't perceived as doing better than Obama because he seemed to know what he was talking about and was able to explain his positions in a clear and eloquent fashion and what he was saying seemed reasonable? No?

If I were you, as a supporter of the Celebrity in Chief, Obama, I'd tread lightly when talking about the effect superficial things have on the public's opinion of a candidate.

I'm not trying to get you to write an essay refuting everything Romney said backed up by links to HuffPo and MSNBC; I'm trying to get you to evaluate how fair you're being and how clearly you're able to see through the filter of your bias.

I've been mostly avoiding the internet for weeks and I plan to continue to until the election is over because the team sports mentality people have about politics these days is stressing me out to the point where it's affecting me physically. Both sides do it equally but both sides think the other side is much worse.

P.S. No, I am not a Romney supporter. Fuck that guy.

I know the feeling, I've stopped listening to the radio because it's mostly election nonsense.
"Obama spills soy sauce on his tie at P.F. Changs! PERMANENT REPUBLICAN MAJORITY COMING??"

I can't believe there's anyone left undecided at this point. Doesn't everyone already have a pretty decent idea of who the candidates are and what they'd do if they were elected?

I don't even know how it would be even that simple to decide right now for myself. I dislike Obama, but I'm not in love with Romney either. And some of the issues themselves are not so easy to decide on (I had a long talk with Iska about this). I think that even though I hate Obama I might VOTE for him for a couple of reasons, only because it'll be better than whatever Romney will do, but I'm dying just thinking about actually making that choice. For me it just comes to how they're deciding on issues important to me, and they both end up having things I like and things I don't. So.... where does that leave me ::meev::

But after all this, I just want Obama out for various reasons. And after all the hype about how great/amazing/messiah he is, I'm even more irked by his existence. I donno, he certainly didn't deliver on issues that I thought were important even though he was practically all about change and pandering to the minority vote blablabla.

I can't wait to see the next debate, I think it'll be about foreign policy. In class one guy was saying that he doesn't think Obama has much of a defense right now for how things are going, and a couple of people yelled out, "He killed Osama bin Laden! HELLO!"
... ooook.

Actually, I'm reconsidering that whole undecided thing now. ::meev:: Still, there are a few things bothering me about Romney. I'll have to decide on what's more important.

I'm also tired of checking my emails and seeing "It's Obama's Birthday!" every day. NO IT'S NOT. LEAVE ME ALONE!

@Iska: Greek columns. I'll never forget that day four years ago XD I really agree with you though.

There's another option: you could refuse to vote for either of them! *gasp* Shocking, I know. People act like it's a cardinal sin to not vote, but I refuse to be bullied into voting for someone I don't fully believe in just because they are the lesser of two evils. It's a matter of principle for me. I plan on voting for some of our local seats but I'm abstaining from voting for president.

If I lived in a swing state where my vote could actually matter, I might feel differently, but CT and NY are firmly blue states (at least for the president - some of the smaller elections go to Republicans occasionally), so it's not like our votes will have any bearing on anything anyway.

South Park, as is often the case, already covered this topic perfectly back in 2004: http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s08e08-douche-and-turd (that's the full episode, so don't click it if you don't have 22 minutes to spare). The kids have to vote for who they want as a new school mascot. Their choices are between (literally) a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich. Stan doesn't understand why he should have to choose either of these terrible choices and so he refuses to vote entirely. His family, school and the entire town are appalled when he tells them this and they banish him from the town as he has committed the most disgusting and worst possible sin by refusing to vote for a douche or a turd. Of course, the reality is that no one really cares about him using his right to vote to express himself - they're just upset that he won't vote because they want him to vote for their candidate (which reminds me of how there was such a huge push to get young people and minorities to vote in the last election. It wasn't because people cared about making sure these groups had their voices heard - it was because they knew that most minorities and young people were likely to vote for Obama) . That's pretty much how I feel about this election. (Actually, that's how I usually feel about the presidential race).

A couple funny (and much shorter) clips from SNL about the election:

Undecided Voters: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/undecided-voter/1418227

And MSNBC's depression and denial over Obama's performance at the debate: http://www.ijreview.com/2012/10/18419-hilarious-snl-mocks-msnbcs-debate-analysis/ (I'm actually kind of impressed by this because SNL is usually so liberal).

I guess there is that option, but I think I know who I'm going to vote for now XD I don't think I'll be able to fully believe in anyone ever though, unless they were my perfect candidate, but I have to make some concessions right now or then I'd never vote. I guess the principle for me is in the voting itself? I also need to legitimize this liberal democracy by taking part in elections.

Just right now I'm feeling mixed up when before I was pretty set on what I'd do, buuuut I think I know where I'm going in the end.

(which reminds me of how there was such a huge push to get young people and minorities to vote in the last election. It wasn't because people cared about making sure these groups had their voices heard - it was because they knew that most minorities and young people were likely to vote for Obama)
I think that's what bothered me the most, especially with all the comparisons to MLK Jr, how we're going to accomplish 'the dream' with Obama. How everything will 'change' with Obama. All that stuff is a lot more toned down now and I'm glad. *shrugs*

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm not going to vote for a minority and a young man just because he's a minority and a young man. I'm not usually like that unless the person is great and I agree with him/her. I was originally a Hillary Clinton supporter, so I started out not wanting Obama from the get go and I was forever skeptical afterwards. I just didn't understand why Obama was The Chosen One all of a sudden. I think you're right when talking about the "effect superficial things have on the public's opinion of a candidate."

I'm still sort of "ehhh" on Romney too, but I see how I'll feel come election time XD

And MSNBC's depression and denial over Obama's performance at the debate: http://www.ijreview.com/2012/10/18419-hilarious-snl-mocks-msnbcs-debate-analysis/
LOL AL SHARPTON.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z303YXnQDKU
I just saw this, the real Chris Matthews, oh man he's so upset XD The reason he didn't do well was because he usually debates people who are sitting, not in a standing position.

In one of my classes, some people were bringing up how they were disappointed with Obama and how he did. This guy in the back proclaimed to us all, "Obama, for the last four years, has been the most powerful man in the world. He has to deal with important issues every day from all these people, and he's done so gracefully. He gets attacked all the time and has to deal with BS. He doesn't have to lower himself to Romney's level and that's why he was the way he was during the debate."

.... I couldn't help but roll my eyes ::meev::

EDIT: I just had to add this picture.

The problem with not voting is that, unlike south park, if you atand up and say you're not voting because both candidates don't cut it, no one will really care. It's a country not a town. By sheer numbers your voice will get drowned out. Besides, it's not like tons of people don't already know they're voting for the lesser of two evils at elections.

Romney took one trip to England and pissed them off. That's one of our strongest allies too. It got mw thinking. He also lies and offshores jobs = ruins the econo. I dunno. Obama might have let me down on a lot of stuff and he may be ineffective, but at least he's not a cunt.

Just my 2 cents. I won't be voting. Too annoying from overseas

I'm all in favor of picking the lesser of two evils. If I didn't, I'd never vote at all.
I'd also point out that we have exactly one guy in government who never picked (what he saw as) the lesser of two evils, and that's Ron Paul. Whether you love him or hate him, he's never gotten a single bill passed since first being elected in 1824.
