I personally feel that while the cost of producing a CD is an absolutely valid deterrent to having one's work released, it's also one easily remedied.

In the doujin ongaku scene (wherein artists like ZUN of the Touhou fame, and ZTS, a famous remixer-turned-professional-composer populate) it's not uncommon, and in fact, expected by consumers, for single-artist releases to simply be burned onto blank cds and shipped in a jewel case with cover art from an inkjet printer taped into it.

Given the examples of musicians I supplied, one may be inclined to think that their audience is just so desperate and doritos-scented that they'd accept even the lowest grades of presentation so long as their nerd lust is satiated. In reality, this method of distribution is acceptable thanks to the passionate love the audience possesses - a love which understands that anything beyond the music, and supporting the person who makes it, is simply shipping peanuts in the end.

I think that Kalm and Dada both have audiences just as enthralled by them as any one in the doujin scene. The posts in this thread, at the very least, support the fact that we've all been worn down to the point where seeing a CD-R in our mailbox labeled "DADA AND KALM (AND SOME OTHER, LESS SIGNIFICANT FOLKS) GO TO THE BEACH ~ GREATEST UNRELEASED HITS OF VELEVET EDEN" in sharpie would make us break down in tears. While I recognize the fact that visual kei begets a stunning presentation by law of its very concept, when it handicaps the very distribution of the music that gives meaning to the madness of white makeup and bad spider drag queens... well... I think it's time to shed at least some vanities.

in short:

dear dada and kalm,
come on.

Even more ammunition to my point: he looks just as dumpy as most of the cd-r peddlers at comiket do! XD

I wasn't expecting a lot of copies either, but his "fans" are always talking about supporting him and being there for him when they clearly aren't. I am not saying I am a better fan than anyone, I am just saying that Velvet Eden was a flop financially
Sadly Jrock fans are like that generally, not just VE fans. A deadly combination of being young and financially dependent and being accustomed to "sharing" rips for free on the Internet. Personally I think Dada probably could afford to produce CDs, but he works with people like Dir en grey, so he's probably used to seeing CDs produced to a much higher standard than Hora's home made pressings, let alone CD-Rs, and online only releases still seem to be an exotic concept in Japan.

Thank you gabespf and Geisha for both providing me with such a clear perspective. :)

I think then that doujin artists face a great deal of the same inevitabilities and tough descisions that jrock ones do. Due to the relationship between doujin ongaku and anime, the same sorts of young fans or blatant 'sharers' that populate the anime fandom create the very same issue. In a huge part of the following, there is a feigned concern for the livelihood of the artist with infrequent financial follow-through. The CD-R distribution was basically a last resort for many artists after coming to terms with the fact that regardless of what presentation they offer, their work will be distributed without their permission, and not for simple sampling purposes either.

:/ In a very big way, I think the prospect of CD-R distribution may also represent a form of financial or personal failure for an artist. I can understand wanting to avoid it for more than just aesthetic reasons or artistic principle.

At the very least though, something like this becoming a considered option for indie jrock artists at large could give those of us able to support them directly a chance.

I suspect a lot of them just don't find it worth their time to manually burn discs and print art, etc. It might be cheaper, but these guys probably don't want to spend their spare time packing orders and going to the post office, right?

Hora's home made pressings
I think he actually sends them off to be pressed in Taiwan, or did last time I checked. They're only recorded in his room ::meev:: Much as I enjoy the notion of him cursing out his 1995-vintage external CD-R burner, using English curses cribbed off of the East Coast/West Coast rap wars, after the 10th coaster in a row ::hora::

1) Dada changed his Facebook name back to: Dada Velveteden

2) He just posted the following comment: We already graduated from VELVET EDEN. But, Why DADA and KALM making a new song now?

Somehow I think if there is a new project it's going to turn out similar to "Dance My Generation" by Golden Bomber, flawless dance moves and all ::meev::

I'm kind of tired of Dada's: I'm going to end Velvet Eden *1day later* I'm back!
Did anyone else see the weird message he wrote about his computer being dead and that he couldn't send Sad Mask/Paraph cds? Was he selling them or something? I tried asking but he never replies to question, just dumb stuff like "DADASAMA I LOVE YOU!!!" ::hora::

So what's the deal with Velvet Eden anyway, are they over or not? Why are they still playing more lives at those goth events?
Dada hasn't really said anything one way or the other, he just updates his FaceBook with model cars and drawings he has made and talks about wanting to cover Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley (And that's not even a joke) ::meev::

Wow. Is that Selia I see in Auto-Mod? Also, KALM. What the. From the kanji all I can get is that this is from their "final gig" before they disbanded last year, is that right? I really hope VELVET EDEN can get their act together and release some new material properly this time round.

UPDATE: Velvet Eden has released a new song on YouTube, Girl's End

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... f5n07-SAPU

Actually, I really like this song a lot! It sounds a lot like old school Velvet Eden, really good stuff! I'm impressed!!

Happy White Day! (3/14)

LYRICS:

Girl's End

Her back dyed light crimson,
Softly embraced by tear drops
She is a frightened and lost blooming flower
But now I feel that her life is ending

Hundreds, thousands, millions of stars glittering in the night sky
Lies as sweet as candy, pretending not to know that these scars will never disappear
This is the room of an adorable child, until you come here at last

Ah, I curse you
Ah, I will say nothing
Ah, look at the moon

And that, dear friends, is the true meaning behind the story of Velvet Eden.

Except, you know, with thongs.

(I'm not sure if those are counted under the "panties" category. ::shifty:: )
