This interview with Kozi and Tetsu from Shinjuku Loft: Rooftop: Highly enlightening and pretty entertaining. Kozi REALLY likes Anime, Tetsu is surprisingly serious, and I think they really need to have a concert when they're old men, playing old Malice Mizer songs on guitars on Tetsu's porch.
Interviewer: First off, can you tell me how you two met?
Tetsu: When I was 18, we both worked in the same shop, one after another. I had been there many times when I was in high school, but all the people working there were pretty strict and I thought I might meet some interesting people there. That’s why I started working there right after graduation.

Tetsu: Oh yeah! That place’s gimmick was you could go up on the stage and sing karaoke! The employee put a song into rotation at the request of the customers, but I got mixed in with someone going onto the stage to sing and I got caught up in the moment. The big climax was when we drove it home with Bad Communication and that was the highlight of the evening.

Kozi: That place didn’t even have a karaoke machine; they just played digital audio or cassette tapes.
Tetsu: Yeah! Strictly speaking, you’re supposed to play the songs in the order that they were requested, but sometimes you think, “Oh, this song popped up! We should totally do this other one next!” and you play it by ear. If someone requests “Song for USA” by Checkers, you just HAVE to play the intro for “SONG FOR USA” by Laughin’ Nose first.

Tetsu: When do you think that was? When you were working on Malice Mizer? I was under the impression that that was just for fun, but that band was just a rip off band of Daisy Chainsaw that we made up.

Tetsu: But I handed the tapes to you before we did that band. When you got a love call, you were told, “That guy working at your old part time job seems interesting, and I’d like to invite him to join the band, would Tetsu sing for us?” The call was from Mana.

Tetsu: That’s right; he had a humongous Mohawk back then. (hahahaha) He had a hardcore punk band in Osaka. When I was in middle school I listened to stuff like Rainbow, and it had kind of a classic flavor to the hard rock. I totally got that. Back then there was this doofus Kozi and Mana, who had an incredible vision for his band, and I thought it was going to be extremely interesting. That’s when I joined Malice Mizer. Under the guidance of Mana, Kozi who makes you think he’s interesting and instantly attracts you and Yu~Ki, who supported everyone, we made up the team. We were all a bunch of 20 something dudes gathered together, and we were all, “Let’s capture the world!” together.
Kozi: That was our style, the destruction of definition because we didn’t want to do what other people were doing.
Tetsu: Back then we could do whatever we wanted.
Kozi: Yeah, that’s right. At first we were opposed to dancing around without having instruments but we decided to try it.
Tetsu: I was with them for 2 years, but because I was the vocalist, I felt terrible for leaving you guys lost without direction. The vocals are the window to what the band is trying to say, and I tried so hard not to destroy Mana’s vision, but I felt like I was losing interest and something didn’t feel right.
Kozi: While we were together, Mana’s conception kept growing and I was always so forceful that it was really hard sometimes. But when I saw Tetsu I felt it was really rough for him and I was worried. After all, I was the one who invited him to join.
Tetsu: I talked to Kozi and Kami a lot back then. The bands I’m in now are completely different from Malice Mizer stylistically, and people have a negative image of me, and a lot of people ask, “Were you actually in Malice Mizer?” I’ve never hated the past, though. I love Malice Mizer; it had a lot of power. When I think back on it now, it was just so intense. Mana was incredibly smart, without thinking of anyone else; he was able to gather together people who valued the same things.

Kozi: After Malice Mizer stopped activities I went solo, I had more chances to meet up with Tetsu. We lived close to each other when the typhoon hit and when he called me and said, “My storage room collapsed, can you help me fix it?” I went over to help.

Tetsu: I still remember, when I was about 24 or 25, I was working part time at a bento place as a delivery guy and I got a call from a mutual buddy asking, “You wanna go to Budoukan?” I asked, “What’s at Budoukan?” and I was told, “It’s Malice Mizer’s first live at Budoukan!” It was pouring rain all day and I was like, What am I doing?? Just delivery stuff? When I got home I listened to a song I made called Sleep (From Zigzo’s first album). Malice Mizer had gradually gotten huge, and I didn’t feel any regret or bitterness about leaving, but I still thought that was awesome. Just like Mana said, the band just kept marching onward like I was seeing when I was in the band. I thought, I really hope they keep going strong toward the sky. Talking to Kozi like this now, we’re both moving onward.
Kozi: Yeah, we still keep running along without stopping. I bet a lot more is going to happen from here on out, but I think we’ll keep doing something like always. Tetsu: Kozi lives by a creed, never doing what other people are doing. THE JUNEJULYAUGUST is strongly following the same conception. That goes for the music as well. I kinda always knew most musicians who don't make it big are somewhere out there in Japan working mediocre jobs to get by but you don't really get a chance to read them say so.
And from the sound of it, Malice Mizer getting to the Budokan was one of the things that convinced Tetsu to make nil happen in 97 with his track 'Sleep'. I still think, despite the many great songs that have come since, to be one of the greatest songs he's written lyrically and musically.
