I know this won't appeal to everyone, as not everyone cares to have bootlegs taking up physical space, but here's a peek at some custom obi I've created for my bootlegs. Originally, I planned on creating full packaging (book/insert, tray, and obi), and I did create one which turned out really nice, but the amount of work that went into it would be very difficult to justify for as many bootlegs as I have.

I've created a bunch for my Malice Mizer & L'arc~en~Ciel bootlegs, as well as some various others, and have another batch to have printed off for some other bands, including Dir en grey and Lareine.

The obi all have a standard design. The spine includes the band, show date, venue and tour (if applicable), as well as an arbitrary catalog number which is basically just the date. The back side includes the tracklist. They were made in Photoshop, and compiled into 8 1/2 x 11 PDFs with cutting template. They were printed by FedEx office and cut by me. I'm still working through some typos that will need reprints, but of course I was so excited to get these done that my proofreading was meh.

For the Malice Mizer obi, I color themed them by era, and I'm really happy with the result.

Anyway, all of my templates can be made available to anyone that would like them, but I want to finish fixing any issues first. Check them out and let me know what you think:

What font did you use for the dates on the Malice Mizer ones?

EDIT: and did you actually manage to perforate those just like real obis? How'd you pull that off?

It's called "English Towne". It was as close to the font used in the cher de memoire II final flyer as I could find.

Just saw this. Yes, they are perforated. I bought a rotary cutter from Amazon (Carl RT-218 ) that has optional perforation and scoring blades. It worked perfectly.

Don't mind the cat hair.

Outer "book" insert:

As you can see, they're simple. But trying to source photos (of decent quality) just isn't feasible. These images are from the flyer. The other thing is that the back section of the obi covers party of the text, but that happens with actual releases so I wasn't too concerned about that. You can also see a slight bowing in the tray... That's because the clear cases I bought have a beveled tray so the measurement was half a mm off. The inner tray is just black.

Anyway, it's pretty, but futile. Lol

Looks pretty good.

These days most bootlegs I get come from the internet, and I never burn them physical, so I guess this wouldn't really benefit me. I do however have some old C-casettes and even a VHS bootleg... Maybe I should start doing this as well.
