I've noticed other bands are more active on Youtube as well. Makes me wonder if it's because they are loosing money from the lack of live performances

Omigod, he sounds amazing and such a delight to watch!

The lack of revenue from live performances is probably the biggest one since so almost all their gigs and contracts are cancelled. Right now though--in Canada, at least--some artists are able to still perform and stream live performances from home thanks to government grants and companies adjusting to new digital platforms.
But there's also the need to create and connect while in quarantine--some artists I know regularly do livestreams on FB/IG/Zoom for free and just ask for donations if people are able to spare some money.
It's nice to have so much content available now but at the same time, it's getting to an overwhelming amount that it's kinda hard to keep track of!

yeah, kaya seems to be an artist more invested in live shows than releases for the moment, every artist is different, and I feel for those who planned album launches, tours etc and have been hit hard by the current pandemic.

While I dislike how streaming services are becoming the new norm, and those services are paying artists an extremely disproportionate amount (it takes about 2k streams for an artist to make £1), and how many "casual" listeners use these services and claim to support artists by doing the absolute bare minimum, what's keeping me going is how people are tuning into streams, supporting folk through patreon, paypal/cashapp, bandcamp fridays (etc).

I sometimes wish Kaya would use simpler forms to support him, like a pay-what-you-can kinda deal, or even PayPal, GoFundMe* etc (*that last service he used for Dress was a mess to use for international fans), there has to be better infrastructure in place for artists to use, especially if with climate change the potential for pandemics to occur is going to rise. Idk if it's a personal choice or one undertaken by Traumerei/management, probably the latter or a combination of both. But it's been a pleasure seeing what he's been posting on YouTube and I would happily support him at a live or through other means if that's possible in the future.

Psh, that's nothing, remember when you had to wire money to him to buy "Kaleidoscope", like some sort of Roaring Twenties stockbroker? You know, when you finished mailing Hora your pink money orders ::meev::

Japan's always been out of the loop when it comes to paying for things - I wonder if they've even made any progress on accepting credit cards since the last time I was there. Among musicians, Hirasawa is the only exception - he was ahead of the curve when it came to dealing with foreigners and accepting payment. And even he used some weird obscure payment service for the longest time before switching to Paypal.

OH GOD i never knew that about Kaleidoscope  that's truly... something. As much as I dislike(d) ::kiwi:: at least DL actually ran pretty smoothly for ordering/shipping items, I remember ordering stuff in bulk, getting EMS shipping for free and having it arrive (in the UK) 2-3 days after ordering and that must have been around 2008/09 time. I understand that his international audience isn't as big as in Japan, but you woulda thought they'd at least try harder to make it accessible instead of having to use proxy services and the like. Saying this, Amazon JP is actually pretty decent but... it's Amazon, and I'd rather avoid giving them money as much as possible.

I wonder if it's a "status" thing in a way? If you have your own production company, no matter how small, you don't want to take "donations" from people even if they are willing to give you money. Or if you've worked for a major label in the past, turning to internet for help now would seem like a "step down" or something.

I've seen some acts from Japan who do operate in a more modern way when it comes to the internet and foreign fans, but those have always been smaller underground projects.
So I suppose it could be a Japanese thing or a status thing or both.

Kind of a shame really. quite a few artists I follow have put up donation links in their profile and/or spotify pages, a lot that I didnt expect to do something like that. Kaya does have a donation thing which I keep meaning to check and try... I know there's one on his online shop but that shop is so fiddly for non JP fans.

also in other news, kaya posted an expanded take on a song he covered last week. I really really enjoyed this but can't find the original anywhere.

It seems like it's a new song made for this occasion, and this is in fact the original:

Her best song is "Million Roses" though ::kaya::

Why is there a random floating white person face in the PV for 'Million Roses'?
(I say that, but why are there ever random white people faces floating around in Japanese media)

I think it's one of those canned karaoke machine PVs, and you know how those are ::meev::

I got the best morning surprise today with Kaya’s cover of Shiroi popping up in my YT recommendations. Hope he does more covers of scape artists!
He sounds great but the green screen and the camera panning across the church is sending me.

I saw it as well and couldn't believe my eyes. I had to stop doing whatever I was doing and watch the video.
It's a really good take, but it sounds like Kaya is trying a little bit too much to change his voice to fit the tone of the song. I mean, in a restrictive kind of way. Or maybe it's the audio mix that makes him sound a bit different? Dunno.
I kinda have a feeling that this would sound much better live with Kaya just singing his heart out to it. Also with a proper band as well!

uh...in all fairness, the bar on that song was unbelievably high.

I liked the spoken part better than the original.

But he's gotta learn technique and vibrato better if he's gonna be holding notes as long as that one towards the end.
The vis kei screams and Dadaesque throat croaks didn't work for me either in this.
Also the timing was a little weird in some parts

As for the music video, I don't think it was meant to be the focus. Right?
Either way, the field mouse brown wig threw of my Malice groove and I'm glad I don't have epilepsy lol

And the party goes on!
September Love would've been a better choice, maybe. Still, I like the fact that Kaya's taste in VK music seems to be 10/10.

Kaya covering Baiser would be a dream come true. Who knows, at this rate it might happen.

Yesss I hope he keeps doing these older VK covers, he sounds dope here! I like that he’s not singing from a karaoke track in this one. Not that the Shiroi instrumental was terrible, just the variety was a pleasant surprise. Either way he could have a power drill doing the instrumentals and I would still be listening to it,
Now this song choice was unexpected (for me anyway). Kaya covering Baiser would be amazing. I wanna see him do Lareine!

Kaya uploaded a new video!

Buuuut it's not a new song. It's a video to the weak Monday Monday b-side. Disappoint.
