I am a bit late, but the thing you talk about X Japan settling the roots for VK is as follows: their motto was/is "Psychedelic violence, crime of visual shock". So I guess that's what you guys were referring to =)

Malice Mizer might not have directly influenced modern VK

Didn't the harpsichord flourish after the periods of MALICE MIZER? ::meev::
Yeah, I hear some band "Moil did Moist" really went nuts with the harpsichord a few years later.
I've noticed plenty of bands advertise their "operatic vocals" and "dual guitar sound" though ::meev::

I assume they've discovered those buzz phrases kick up sales or something.

Not to mention having a token lolita in your band. ::meev::

I think it is hard to say how influential MM really were. Influences aren't always obvious and bands often won't admit to being influenced by someone, even when it is obvious. That said, compared to the aforementioned "influential" VK bands MM were pretty far out there in terms of music, image and performance, which is more difficult to relate to, harder to pull off well and promises less commercial appeal, so I'm not surprised that they weren't more widely copied (although Mana's influence on lolita fashion is undeniable).

I think the fact that Columbia released those cash-in collections and that Mana was recruited by Sony to produce a pop artist show that they aren't forgotten though. At Dis Inferno, where Mana and Kozi first performed together again, some (Japanese) fans cried when they played MM songs and nothing made people cheer louder than when Mana put his arm around Kozi's shoulder. And at the Sherow Artist Society event a couple of days later Kamijo made a little speech about MM and then performed Au Revoir.

Kamijo's pretty much a given if you're going to mention someone who has an interest in MM, though, being an ex roadie and all, so of course he's going to like them. ::meev:: Not many people in the scene now a days can claim to be on casual talking terms with Mana and Gackt, I'd say, so of course he's not going to hide that since he's more than just your typical fan- he's a friend of the band.

yeh, and i think that makes it more special.

besides being roadies once and friends, they're fans. That's really lovely. I wonder if Mana feels the same about Lareine?

^ What I mean is that he's got more of an invested reason to use them as an influence, opposed to someone else who's never met anyone in malice mizer being influenced by them. It's a matter of a controlled and uncontrolled environment, I think.

† Kozi’s performance: we have a renewed appreciation for his music. To our surprise, Kozi sang all the songs himself and included tracks from Eve of Destiny.

from LA CARMINA blog o_O

...just got me wondering.

EoD? I doubt it. Kozi does not usually play Eod songs in his solo lives, and the setlist from japanese blogs do not list any Eod songs. I think they just though some songs of Kozi were Eod's...like in the video they talk about eod, and then after they put a video of Cacophony live, the thing is that it is so different from the cd version, that they must thought it was an eod song.

^ La Carmina's not always been the best source of information if you're looking for facts though...

hm, yeah right. I just read her diary, it has very little information about the live itself. I didn't know this girl until now.
