It's not bad, but... they killed the spirit of the song. There is certain magic to that song, at least I feel it that way, and this cover doesn't capture it.

In some places the tempo makes it feel too rushed, I was not pleased with that break-down at 3:10 (it risked ruining the mood of the song), and I think they could have ended it in a much better way.

That said, this was pretty awesome ::k::

The edginess of this version is just enough to make me love the song--sometimes it's hard to get past the sugar-sweet, cornballness of the original arrangement. Also, the guitar and instrumental arrangement in this version is head-and-shoulders above anything Malice Mizer could have written at the time; it's real complex and solid and pretty kick-ass.

I'm glad that D's vocalist can do such a good Gackt impression. He may not have the refinement and absolute skill level of Gackt, but his timbre hits the mark and he does a good job.

Overall, this cover had a lot of energy, surprising complexity and edginess (value-added IMO), and is full of the Malice Mizer spirit. I can tell this makes a great tribute to the band because, after hearing it, I feel like listening to Malice Mizer for the first time in a long, long time.

EDIT: I have to agree with herjer on this one. This version is better than the original.

This is really my only problem with the original song - I don't think it's actually bad but it's just a little...cheesy? Babyish? (though not as much as Brise and Ju te Veux, obv.)

it sounds too much like something from the castlevania: symphony of the night soundtrack without ever being as good :|

Quoted for verity.

I have, however, narrowed my dislike down to the drumming. We hates it, precious. At ~1:20 when "Kirei na yoru dakaraaa" starts, the drums are like BAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAP and it sounds really bad. Like borderline ruins the chorus and Asagi's singing.

Of course, I'm excited to hear the non-assy Youtube rip. I was baffled at first too; normally J-stuff doesn't leak this dang early! Still excited for that whole album.

I really really like it. Of course I don't like it as much as the original, but that's why covers exist. :D I agree with the other posters who pointed out the vocalist doing a Gackt impression, that's what I initially thought when I first heard the song -- I can't point my finger on it right now, but he really tries to pass off a Gackt. XD

I keep thinking how thrilled Asagi must have been to cover this. He really respects Gackt.

Also, I think if D married their old style with the tune it would sound even better than it already does. Their first few albums were just as entrancing (to me) as Malice Mizer's and I was hoping to hear the return of old D with the news of the cover album. That didn't happen but I'm totally satisfied with this version. :D

I like it but I'll probably never listen to it again or anything. They're no Malice Mizer, obviously.

Yeah, Old D was very nice, nowadays i find them too generic, though.

Yep, It's all fault of the "metalcore" distortion and power chords everywhere

If anything I'd say there's not enough distortion in VK.

I hate squeaky clean guitar tones

Now that I'm home from work and have been able to listen to it, here is my in-depth review:

This is fun. I like it.

the cd is supposed to be "celebrating" original VK of the 90's, so i think its perfectly fitting to have that "generic" VK sound...although that seems to have become a dirty word these days D:
