Oh, God damn it. It was just a jokey, throwaway line. I didn't think to clarify what I meant since I didn't mean much by it at all.
So we can move on: I just meant that South America is generally to the left of the US. As I said, they have socialist political parties (their president's party's ideology is described as "democratic socialism"), which we don't have here (or, we do, but they are tiny fringe groups with zero power) because socialism is a four-letter word to us. No, it's not *officially* a socialist country, but neither is France and MissUMana herself said that her country could maybe be described as socialist. I was just talking about a general tendency towards leftist thinking.
I admittedly and obviously don't know much about Brazil and the last thing I meant to do was to stir up some annoying political debate in this thread of all places. *sigh*
