for just the kind of people who don't like getting hugged by Atari Jaguar owners.
Are you sure it wasn't to cater to the South American audiences and their love of Mana's tiny doll-like hands? ::mana::

Speaking of hands, I had too much time on mine and birthed this memetic monstrosity as a result.

An old schoolmate recently contacted me on Chinese slave facebook to let me know that, even though his friend told him NEVER to tell me...
When I was in kindergarten the teacher asked me to do something and I said, "I refuse." Because I was a little snot back then too.
So friend went back home and was like, "Dad there was this girl at school and she said the thing to the teacher"...and now I'm a family inside joke.
His dad'll randomly walk over to people, say, "I refuse," and walk away laughing.

I am legend ::dix:: Dunno why his friend didn't want him to tell me.

After the passage of many years they too said "I refuse".

What is up with Japanese people not being able to wink? It may sound absurd, but I have encountered this quite a few times in my time here.

Winking is on the same chromosome that controls being able to curl your tongue, tasting cilantro as bitter, poison ivy immunity, and having only five toes.

Last night I actually got a library (pronounced: "liberry") card for the first time since I was a kid. You can't get into the research room at the New York Public LIbrary's performing arts divisiion without one. In fact, not only do they make you have a card, but you have to give up all your possessions like going through airport security. I was surprised they let me keep my shoes.

Supposedly you have to go through a whole process of showing ID and verifying your address for this (a signed note from the director of your homeless shelter will do), but in practice they just punched out a card from a sheet and gave it to me. I guess I looked trustworthy since I had already passed security.

Here are a couple of trends I've recently noticed.

Most of the 15-year olds I teach have never used a 'regular' phone to make a call, only smartphones.

A lot of students have heard of Sailor Moon, but can't recognise the character.

Likewise, they know Sadako but don't know what movie she is from.

Also wearing your smartphone on a strap like it is a handbag seems to really be in now.

But have they used a fax machine?

That one doesn't surprise me I guess. There's being "a pretty big deal in the 90s", and then there's being "the only anime on TV in the 90s" XD
Do they know Dragon Ball Z? There is, after all, precisely one boys' anime and one girls' anime.

You're in luck, the school still uses a fax machine and I have an excellent test candidate as one of the admin girls was hired fresh out of High School.
The next time I see her, I'll ask her if she ever used one before starting work.

Do they know Dragon Ball Z?
I think everyone knows the Dragon Ball franchise, or at least I'm going to assume that everyone knows it is a martial arts series about a guy named Goku.
However, I'm not sure how many of the characters they could name, but given that they're all mainly food puns they're probably picked up a few.

Things might get a bit trickier here, I don't know if they would be able to recognise specific seasons or arcs.

On youtube I made the mistake of listening to the Kinnikuman, Evangelion, and Patalliro Saiyuku theme songs for old time's sake...and the instramental version of That Song.
Now youtube is convinced, for weeks, that I want to listen to the 100 best anime songs of the 90's and learn the Ultraman dance.
(btw the Ultraman dance looks like some sort of Jane Fonda rip off for the unathletic)

I'm going to learn the Ultraman dance tho

While we're on the topic of mistakes, does anyone else hate the trend of giant sans serif words as an architectural feature?

I just received another unusual spam email, it was by all appearances a regular unauthorised account access/phishing email, but every link was just a mailto:. Seems like a bit weird given they went to the trouble of spoofing the From address to make it look like an official Microsoft message.
