I almost bought "Lord Foul's Bane" at the same store, but you probably wouldn't have read it with me XD

Gee, what gave you that idea?
Actually, I'd be 100x more likely to read the book than watch that tv show.

So they made a (notoriously) impenetrably terrible tv show off of a notoriously impenetrable and terrible book?
And then they actually invited people who LIKE this book to speak on it?
My god.

Someone at Starbucks: Unicorns are pretty popular... All we need is just ONE more person to buy a book about unicorns and management will allow us to unleash this new unicorn themed beverage upon the unsuspecting denizens of the world!
@sailorKa is here visiting and he insisted on trying to find the legendary unicorn frap ::meev:: They were sold out everywhere though.

It was this 5 day Unicorn Frappuccino concoction at Starbucks that was pretty much a cup full of flavored sugar syrup. I avoided it because I'm actually a huge fan of candy and things I shouldn't eat and I was afraid if I tried this unholy abomination unto creation, I'd like it... DX

It reminds me of the Horton Hears a Who pancakes from iHop lol
And my Unicorn Spew Hoodie
It brings tears to my eyes knowing that Unicorns are finally getting the recognition they...eh...recognition.
Cause I dunno if anyone or anything really deserves to be recognized by a diabetes drink...

Not reading "The Tale of Genji" because @faith isn't getting the lead out XD

But in the meanwhile I finished up with Natsume Soseki's "I Am A Cat". It was kind of a mixed bag since it was originally a serial publication with no overarching plan, but when it was good it was really good.

New arrival here: a copy of "The King In Yellow" from 1905... which is actually yellow:

Interesting so far. HP Lovecraft and his people were fans of this, I think that's where they got "Hastur".

Currently, I've been reading Yurei: The Japanese Ghost.

I completely forgot I was reading this, after being discharged from hospital I became sidetracked and swept up in work.

This month has been fairly quiet so I've been catching up things I've always wanted to read but never made the time to, so far I have read -

  • Bushido: The Soul of Japan
  • The Metamorphosis
  • Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
  • The Prince
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Today I started on 'The Picture of Dorian Grey' which I'm on track to finish either tomorrow or Thursday!

Bringing back the book thread for a dollar-store find:
The Violent Gang, by Lewis Yablonsky
From 1962, based on the author's social work with New York City gangs in the mid-1950s. This is quite clearly the inspiration for "The Warriors"... but not apparently "West Side Story", surprisingly enough. Despite this book being drawn from happenings on the actual Upper West Side, it seems the musical was inspired by news coverage of Chicano gangs in California.

The Tale of Genji reminded me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nansō_Satomi_Hakkenden

A complete reprinting in ten volumes is available in the original Japanese, as well as various modern Japanese translations, most of them abridged. Only a few chapters have been translated into English, Chapter 25 by Donald Keene, Chapters 12, 13, and 19 by Chris Drake, and in 2021 the first volume of a translation by Glynne Walley, titled Eight Dogs, or "Hakkenden" Part One – An Ill-Considered Jest was published by Cornell University Press.

So there's finally an official English release of it, even if it's just part one. Hell yeah! Might actually buy it.

Sadly, I'm a very slow reader. I've been reading Marcel Proust and I enjoy his writing a lot, but once I put a book down I don't pick it up in a year. Maybe I have an ADHD or something.

I very much enjoyed the "Outlaws of the Marsh" so I'm curious what a Japanese entry in that genre would be like. Too buried in other reading backlogs to pick it up for now though :B

Meanwhile: finished up with "The Violent Gang" and the author's big recommendation at the end was to enroll gang members in Synanon ::meev::
In fairness, this was written before it became quite so much of an abusive brainwashing cult (which notably tanked Cesar Chavez's career, among others), but the writing really should have been on the wall already if you ask me.

Actually, since this thread got bumped up, it occurred to me that I should give a shout out to Coin Locker Babies by Murakami Ryo.
The book is a little misogynistic but also it was written by a Japanese man back in the days so wtvr.
Either way, it's one of those things that seems to have a lasting impact on the vis kei world and the story itself is interesting.
