[Split from the Random thread, since I thought it was an interesting discussion. :]

My sister just told me that they're removing the music from her school. That my friends is a tragedy. She goes to middle-school and starting next year, there isn't going to be a band, or a piano, or choir subjects.

So, now my involvment with Save the Music Foundation is closer to me than ever.

I'm sure all the musicians here would agree that a school removing the music program is terrible. So, if you've got spare money, why not donate to a worthy cause?

That's absolutely ridiculous. It amazes me how much US schools will cut for money, but they don't care about how music may benefit a child.

Exactly. I think alot of the school systems think that the music program is a luxury, and isn't needed. Though, in reality it helps kids feel excited about school, in turn it makes them a better student. At least, that's how it was for me, and my sisters.

It really is a nessesity(sp) I can't spell tonight! :|

I totally agree, Priss. Not just music--all of the arts. It saddens me so much when schools cut these programs. Anyone can learn book education--its the arts which keep the creative students nurtured properly. Something science and mathmatics cannot do, imo. Everyone needs a chance to express themselves and explore their artistic side, especially as a child.

I think the only thing that's kept the music department at my (former) highschool is all the unbelievable amounts of time and money donated by the parents. The band and is one of the top on the west coast, and they get no recognition for it. And you have to pay money to take an art class because otherwise the school can't afford the supplies. That seems kind of messed up. :P

anyway, I just read an entire paragraph about avocados and thought I was reading about lawyers up up until the last two sentences. (that's what happens when you don't pay attention to French).

Re: the music cuts:

This happened with a district near where I am. I can relate to this, Priss, since we're both in CA and our state government is, let's face it, in enormous amounts of debt. SOMEthing had to be cut, and unfortunately they chose music education, which wasn't looking good for my mother, who makes her living at music education... but of the districts around us, the one she works for is the only one who has their crap together so well that music wasn't cut for them, ensuring her job (especially since she just got her Masters; it would have been super lame if, the next academic year after she got it, her job got cut). So I thank God she still has a job and a pay raise... But she and I BOTH support the cause of arts in the schools.

I think music and art are just as important as math and literature in school. Math and literature are for one side of the brain, art and music are for the other. Both must be exercised. This really disturbs me... >_<

WRONG! According to alot of teachers in our school , Music and Art are not "real" subjects.

...that doesn't make him right...that just makes him ignorant.

But I'm hoping you already knew that.

Besides, Strawberry Switchblade are from Glasgow...so not everyone thinks like your music teacher or the world would have been deprived of many glorious polka dots.

Hahah, oh yeah. Art can't possibly be a real subject or career. Heaven forbid people actually enjoy their job.

I work just as hard, with just as much homework (perhaps more!) than my secondary education+math major roommate. The difference is I love every second of it, and she complains about her classes.

I'd like to give a color theory project or a music theory project to anyone who says art or music isn't a "real" field of sudy, and see how they do. :P

Edit: OH NOEZ! 100th page. It's mine, Flowers! You stole my reboot of the music thread, ye bastard. SHARING IS CARING. ;D

Heh, having learning science, math, english, etc, I must say that art is far more complicated and challenging than any bookish field. There is no method to follow, no concrete boundaries, no restraints or guidelines except for the most basic which anyone can master. English comes close only because constructing a story or poem uses many of the same creative components as making art does--I could go so far as to say language it as artform.

But as an illustrator, I'm obviously biased. ;] I have plenty of respect for those who pursue schorlary fields, but anyone who looks down their nose at the arts has, quite frankly, no idea what they're talking about. It's perhaps one of the most important fields in society. All forms of entertainment, advertising, fashion, etc comes from it. Art defines culture, and it also has extensive mental health connections. There would be no expression without art. Art is an integral part of humanity. How is that not importnat? :]

OMG POSTING ON PAGE 100 o-o///

I'll leave this one for you ;)
Arr, we're all "in discussion" though. Should I split it to another thread? (If I can figure out how to use THE BUTTON?)

To be fair, the same can be said of math and science once you advance past the basics. It's just that there are a lot more basics to get through before you get into the creative stuff. You won't see any researcher in any field saying, "Oh I just followed Method X and came up with this new idea".

PS - Karot doesn't know me.

True, but the point where working with that level of creativity in art versus other fields is incredibly staggered. Even the most elementary artists must make things up as they go--because nothing can ever dictate exactly how something will look with the factors of color, lighting, texture, atmosphere, composition, line, shape, space, angle, style and mood with work in any piece. It's more or less all up to the artist's good judgement and aethetic taste. Sure, there are guidelines like the 2/3 composition rule and basic anatomy, but the tricky part is that you have to learn those rules with the additional knowldge of those rules not being meant to be followed.

I by no means intend to belittle science, math, etc. But I must defned the fact that art takes just as much work and understanding of the world as any other field. It's incredibly intricate; that's something I think people who look down on art don't realize. the same goes for music, of course--I just cannot argue the case myself since I know so little about music. But perhaps my ignorance aids my argument... i'm exposed to music every day. To have lived with it for so long and STILL not understand how it works must speak something for its complexity.
