This is pretty much me, too.

Wish lists are convenient but also tacky so I don't bother with them. My "wish lists" are just a list of things I'll eventually buy at a later date.

My system lately: put together a wish list with way more things than anyone's likely to buy, and then just saying "Pick something and surprise me". That way it's still half a surprise.
I remember doing that back when I was still into Polly Pocket and Barbies. I'd just list every possible thing and star the ones that were REALLY important and that I ABSOLUTELY NEEDED ::meev::
I guess the stuff you really want you'd just get yourself? Hmmm...

Right now my wish lists are short and straightforward, and they mostly consist of games and books ::kisaki:: And some random items like a bag and something Hello Kitty XD
My list is short but I know I'll get nerdy random things from my parents so it's always a surprise!

I already got my early Christmas presents already (some of it!), and that person swore never to do it again because of the exorbitant shipping costs, and shitty customer service of China post.

I wouldn't mind receiving cash myself. I'm a poor student and my savings account isn't enough to sustain myself so every little bit counts. But if someone decides to give me something else that's okay too, especially if they've put some thought into it. I like giving really really weird gifts though. On a class Christmas party, I gave a calendar made out of lego so it's really customizable :p I'll start my shopping once finals is done, and then I could rake through all the thrift stores ::hora::

But for Christmas, I just really want (NEED!) a student loan/scholarship so I don't get stressed out over money. T_T

EDIT: So I guess giving cash as gifts is okay too. That way the person could buy whatever s/he wants, as opposed to receiving something shitty. :)

I voted "I'm fine with it," but it's because I'm a poor undergrad double-majoring student. Since I was on my teens, my parents would sometimes give me cash as a birthday gift, if not, it was something practical like a desk or chair, food, or nothing because they don't think it's an obligation to hand out gifts. I rather give cash as a gift if the person is an adult because I'm usually at a loss whenever I have to give someone a gift, and I don't want to give them something that can be crap for them. This year I bought my own Christmas and birthday gifts since they're on the same month.

What I find appalling is how kids these days only give each other gift cards as gifts whenever there's a gift exchange party at their schools. One of my sisters got a gift card from a clothing store while the other one went bold and asked for a soccer ball as a gift.

10 times out of 10 I ask specifically for money.

I prefer buying things for myself. I'm not into gift giving and receiving...
