I have been waiting SO LONG for a D'espairsRay full album, and I just received COLL:SET yesterday. I popped it in immediately and by the first track, Infection, I was amazed. It only got better with the next track, DEARS (totally owns Gackt's DEARS btw). I'm going to save the rest for a proper review but one is coming withing the next two days.

All I have to say so far is that the wait was by far worth it.

is despairs ray a new jrock band?

Now, they're actually quite established, and have been around for sometime, now. http://www.despairsray.jp/

I can't wait to read your review, Kazuo! :D Also, how was the packaging? I'm intrested. ;)

I have been a big fan of DR for years now... and they have slowly unimpressed me with each new release. Garnet was amazing... Born, was not.

I guess I need to give this album a few more listens, but for now, it is rather just average and boring to me. Nothing has changed with this band.

I also feel like the more rocky/metal they get, the more they sound like korn. Which is not a good thing for me. That "in vain" track made me cringe with that classic Korn screech in the background ></

Anyway, I need to listen to it some more...

That's funny, because I didn't take much more than a passing notice of them until Born. Garnet sort of grabbed my interest, but Born really did it for me.

I'm not hearing the Korn thing really...I guess I just always associated Korn with the high, sparse guitar whineys and the clicky-clicky bass sounds, though.

But you're right about one thing: They really haven't changed that much. And I'm actually okay with that, thank god. It's consistent.

I think the production on here is great. Listen to Terrors, then listen to Coll:set. :)

I take it back. Born was boring, but I did like the Gemini Single, so I had hope fo this album. There is not one song that grabs me. :/

The main thing I associate with Korn is the vocals... and Hizumi hits so many of those annoying "waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh"'s that korn made 'famous'.

Production means nothing if the music is unoriginal or boring. I say the techinical production on the new Backstreet Boys album was probably great, so?

Hear hear!
I haven't heard this CD but I think that for most types of music, "production" is highly overrated. A lot of my favorite releases have minimal production, in fact.

Ah, I see. I guess I listen to how the instruments sound as opposed to vocals, which is why you hear Korn and I don't. :-P

Touche on production.

But you're right; this one's a lot heavier and there's a lot less 'groove'. Still, I've only given it one listen, but I did notice an uncharacteristically complex melody on...the 'tsuki' song, is it?

Garnet was what made me love D'Ray, Born I liked but it wasn't as exciting. I just downloaded this album so I'm looking forward to what they've done.

i totaly agree with lejun. This album is boring, more of the same and these remixes are so disappointing >_<;. Gärnet, Born and Gemini single were much better, in my opinion. i will try to listen more to it too....maybe i will like more this album :(

I think I feel the same way about this release, I was so looking forward to it! Now after listening to it I feel completely unfulfilled >_<! I was hoping for something more like Reddish in the future, but alas, it has not happened yet -_-...

Hizumi hits so many of those annoying "waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh"'s that korn made 'famous'.

This may just be my L'Arc high at the moment, but on some of the songs he sounded A LOT like Hyde imo >_>...

*gets ready for slappage XD!

I'm disappointed too. I loved all of D'espairs Ray's releases so far and I was really looking forward to this album but I think the new songs are uninspired and I don't like the more rock/metal feel either. They are beginning to sound unoriginal and middle-of-the road. I'm sad because they used to be one of my favourite bands. I hope their next release will be more interesting... :(

I completely agree that production means nothing if the music is unoriginal and boring but sometimes I find it frustrating to listen to something really good that could be spectacular if only the production was better.

Yeah; I missed Flower's quote for some reason.

I side with Geisha on that one more I think, and I was mostly culling my statement from lstening to the Terrors disc, where Fascism was a killer some live and could have been awesome on disc, but they just didn't have the resources to clean it up. (For example.)

So basically, I avoid demos and old tapes like the plague. It's the most frustrating thing in the world. "Sadness", for example, is a song that should rank as one of the best MM songs, but thanks to the fact that it was cursed to an old tape makes me really dislike it a lot, and that's a conservative statement. Plus, I figure if there's just a bunch of demos, no one gave that band a chance... so it just kind of makes me skeptical. Either they weren't noticed or they were really crap, and I can't hear that necessarily through poor production.

Like, my band's stuff is terribly produced AND just plain sucks. :)

Ok, I am back and after giving this album a few more tries I have to say I have grown to like the song Abel and Caine o_x...

However other than that song and Tsuki no Kioku, the others just can't seem to demand my attention any further >_>.

Alright, first, I'd like to say I can hear the Korn/Jonathan Davis influence on the album. I'm not sure whether that's on purpose or not.. but it's there regardless.

I, personally, really like the album because I've never been one to look for alot of originality or amazing music in D'espairsRay. I just like them because they like to rock hard and do it well. Hizumi is one of my favorite vocalists/screamers, and I'm very selective with my screaming. DEARS would have to be my favorite song on the CD, closely followed by Tsuki no Kioku ~fallen~ and "Forbidden". I've been a long time fan of D'espairsRay and I hear a few new things from them on this CD which is nice. While it's not the most amazing CD I've ever heard, certainly not, it's what I expect from DesRay. Your basic hard rocking semi-goth music. In any case, I'm satisfied. This is just a first album though, so I can see plenty of room for improvement.

I thought the cd was not to bad.. I found it a lot more melodic than their past work. I guess everyone is used to the screaming from past releases.. But I do agree that it could have been better.
