Do you find fangirls/fanboys annoying. You know the ones who are obsessed with one thing and their life seems to revolve around that one thing alone e.g. like some girls who know every little thing about mana collect every mana thing they can find, go to all lives, can't start the day without looking at his picture and say goodnight to him, the poster on their wall, at night...etc.

The word "Fanboy"/"Fangirl" is bandied about willy-nilly and higgledy-piggledy by people who are dangerously close to the frame of mind they attribute to them but desire not to be lumped into that category by other people at large, so they try to imply a huge disconnect between themselves and "fanboys/girls".

I am all for people with a passion, even a consuming passion. It makes people interesting. Obviously things can be taken too far, but other than saying goodnight to him the person you describe doesn't seem all that annoying.

Besides, it is almost solely on the backs of "fanboys/fangirls" that these artists/authors/games/whatever survive.

You describe them as "obsessed with one thing alone" and I don't see how that's a problem. Some people are extremely knowledgeable on one subject, others are jacks-of-all-trades and masters of none, dabbling in many with yet still an impressive depth.

Frankly I'd like to take the word back. I am startled, surprised, but beginning to embrace what I perceive is my own fanboyism over certain things, especially because I think what may be more annoying than the ideal "fangirl" is people who describe anyone who lacks a sense of detachment from the entertainment in question as a "fangirl". I am a Kaela fanboy, an Exist Trace fanboy, a Transformers fanboy... obviously there are those far more far gone than I who perhaps deserve a different moniker, but I have NO clue why all of a sudden more-than-casual fans decided that excitement, passion, and drive to immerse oneself in something was such a bad thing.
'
This poll is more than a tad biased and none of the choices align with my position.

There are some things that I consider "fangirl/boy" in a sense....
like, for example, I got death threats for posting my friend's Kaya video on youtube. Nevermind that Kaya was cool with the video...

On top of that, some people also make silly things up about the artists and then idolize them, and stop acknowleging them as people.

As long as they recognize that they don't know the artists and respect them and their other fans then I can appreciate fanpeople.
But I mean, it's not like I can like or hate them as a group because they're much more than just fans.

EDIT: And a certain grumpy Spanish troll kept going on about fangirls and stuff and he was annoying. So I find people who complain about fanpeople a lot a little annoying too.

I like collecting Moi dix Mois CDs, I put Mana's poster on my wall, I play Mana's songs on guitar, I have lots of Mana pictures on my computer, etc. But, I don't consider myself a 'fan-boy'. I'm just a fan.

I consider fan-girls/fan-boys as people who say they "Love" all things from a musician, but they barely know anything about the person or their works. For example:

"OMG I LUV MANAS BAND MON AMOUR"
"OMG AYA IS SO HOT I HERD HE WUZ ON DRUGZ!!!!!11"

So by my logic, fan-girls/fan-boys are annoying.

@faith: Really? O:

I thought it was funny. There was really no need for people to react like that.

These all-capped AOL-ish shouts are typically gross mischaracterizations of the opposing viewpoint engineered to make the opponent seem more extremist than he/she actually is.

I have never heard or seen anyone talk or type like that. Unless it was done sardonically. But then it doesn't count. ::meev::

Honestly, I know some people can be a little aggravating with their lack of knowledge and/or rituals, but does that give us a right to make fun of them? People express their love for things in different ways; I don't think it's our right to judge. Of course, I've made fun of my share of people before(who hasn't?), but I've come to realize they do things their way, and I do mine my own way.

The only condition is that they don't harm or threaten other fans for not agreeing with them. Once they do that, I think it's perfectly fine to judge qnd lol at them.

This.
I think the only ones I don't like are those that show exactly zero social grace or self-awareness in crowds. Otherwise, I'm generally optimistic about people.

I've heard people talk like that...

I don't think being a fangirl/fanboy is bad, its just to what extreme you go to to express that love. I don't mind them though, theyre fine to me, as long as they don't bother anyone.

Yes, I admit, I'm a total Klaha/Zhuge Liang fan girl and I get excited over them. What I don't do is tell other people that Klaha is the best and make them feel bad about what they do like. Its happened to me before, when someone says "OMG YOU SUCK" when I happen to like something a lot. :|
Of course, if the fan is stalking their idol to a point that makes the idol get scared, that's wrong too.

@SDjilliaRE: Haha, I remember reading about the Mana Mon Amor thing somewhere. That really did happen XD

@Everyone: PureElegance is right. Someone on Batsu said it during the 'NoFuture' nightmare. xD

They don't all write it caps. I just added that, because they might as well be.

I don't think they're a threat or anything, I just think it's annoying when people like that have no idea what they're talking about, or when they try to spread fake rumors.

Depends on what lvl of fandom they're on... Some fanboys/girls have a really good sense of humour, inwhich they can parody the series/whatever and its fandom overall... Meanwhile others either parody it in scary ways and turn it into some delusional universe inwhich everyone's gay with eachother for no reason....... and then there are the people who defend it to the death and never allow anyone to make any jokes at all.

So I picked "As long as they don't bother me, I'm cool" because I really don't mind fangirls/boys unless they're hella scary.

Going along with elec's clarified definition of fanboy/girl, I totally agree that an impassioned admirer or fan is a good thing and certainly not wrong.

But I think, elec, you might have forgotten another breed of fangirl/boy that exists. The kind that is disrespectful (i.e., makes sexual remarks about an artist); the kind that is vicious to oncoming criticism; the kind that misunderstands the artist in question due to either a lack of knowledge or a lack of intelligence; the kind that is aggressive to people who like artists that might be at some sort of artistic odds with their idol (I've seen Mana fans get pretty feisty about Gackt fans before); etc.

I think these people are disturbing, and I think you could also describe them as fanboys/girls. There are simply healthy fanpeople and unhealthy ones. I think the healthy ones are in the majority, though, and they are certainly fine.

Not true. Someone here said it, while making fun of Batsu. They just quoted it like it was "real" in their signature.

Anyway... depends what kind of fangirl. I feel that the obsessive fans in Jrock are split into two categories... the ones that try to seek the facts, appreciate the music, support the bands... those people are cool. I like talking to them, I like hanging around them, and to an extent I am one myself.

Then there is the kind that beats up other fans to get closer to the band in a concert, punches a girl in the face to get some stupid towel a band threw at the end of the show (actually happened at JRR ::erm::), is more concerned with how the band looks than how they sound, never buys anything but rants and raves about the band constantly, is more concerned with groping the vocalist at a show than enjoying the concert and respecting the other fans' space, freaks out at the slightest criticism to the band.... those types of fangirls can bugger off.

So, yeah. As long as they're of the interesting and level-headed persuasion rather than the asshole category, I'm keen. That goes for people in general, not just fangirls.

Edit: thought it should be said, even if a person is cool and level-headed, if they're obsessed with only ONE thing I'm not likely to hang around them except in relevant situations, because they can get boring fast if they never talk about anything else.

I hadn't forgotten, but you summed it up better than my awful attempt. In fact I think that if you wanted to make a list of Fan Commandments as to what not to do, these would suffice. Very nice.

@navate: Really? D:

But, I remember reading it on Batsu. DD:

@Berserk: I agree 100%.

That's the type of fan-people I was talking about.

That actually made me remember the crazy fan that had Mana sign a bag saying "I <3 Yaoi" with an "I <3 Gackt" pin on it, during the California Convention. Talk about rude and uncalled for.

I mean, I poke fun and make jokes, but I don't do anything directly offending.

"Fangirl" is not the word for those people who get called "fangirls". They're more like.. well, I've had a conversation about this before.

The "random girl". The kind that always say "i'm so random", "(somethingsomething) DOOM!", "spork", and all that stuff that makes eyes twitch and small furry creatures go insane.

Anything further than that puts them into the category of "loony". D:

Side note: Now I know someone's gonna think it's sexist to only say "girl" but really, the guys who act in such a manner don't really exist in these kind of fandoms.

Yes; in fact I notice that the girls' vice, typically, tends to be that all-consuming infatuation that can seem abrasive and sappy to boys. The boys, on the other hand, seem to get off on elitism and claiming they're 'above' the 'base' modes of appreciation. Such is the most common vice for each.
