French language

I am prepering a thesis about the influence of french language in the world. Mana use a lot of french words with the things that deal with his music( Moi dix Mois, Moi Même Moitié, Mon+amour, fated~"raison d'être"~,Ma chérie,ect. So I just would like to know if all of us think that it is a good choice from Mana or if you would prefer another language.
Well I'm new here and I don't know if it is an interesting topic so please be indulgent

I don't think there's much to analyse (or worth analysing) in Mana's use of French. Anyway, he basically said everything in his "interview" on the Nolife TV channel.

I don't think Japan is a good topic for this. I think they mainly use French to indicate something exotic and/or European. And usually not very good French

But I second flowers's sentiments. Japan's not a good topic to use unless you're mentioning it as a sub topic to a broader range of ideas- such as "world-wide use of french and the reasoning behind its use" or something.

Because I sure can't...

Once I saw Juka pronounce "Moi Dix Mois" on a live video. He made a mistake in the "x". At least, if I remember correctly the x shouldn't be pronounced because of the "M" in Mois(or was the other way around? pff, French is confusing). Anyway, he did it wrong, can't remember which way. That kinda suggested that the band isn't that familar with the language.

I agree with flowersofnight, exoticism is quite a popular thing in Japan. That's why the unnecessary usage of mainly French and German words in Japanese bands and manga/anime.

really? never heard of that rule actually. but that can't be right. Because in "deux" you don't pronounce the "x". I am very sure of that. On the other hand, in "six" you do pronounce the "x", so maybe it is related to the "i"?

I'm assuming you mean when you're just counting, because then it's just saying the numbers by themselves, right?
In Moi dix Mois the only reason it's pronounced is because Mana was silly and katakana-fied it as mowa disu mowa, which I guess makes it the way he 'wants' it to be pronounced, even if it's incorrect.

The pronunciation of the word would not changed when used in a sentence, so the x is still pronounced. You're thinking of T's when they're at the words how they're only pronounced when the word that comes after it begins with a vowel.

I dunno, I think it would just sound really awkward in a similar phrase like "Il y a dix mois..." to leave the x sound there :/

in the 90s there were like a lot of bands using french anyway, like Lareine [xD]

and a lot that I can't remember or actually never listened to


some bands also still follow that... but they don't seem to rock XD

Back when I was really into Malice Mizer I always thought they should use Spanish instead of French xD As for Japan recently it seems popular to have random Spanish writing on clothing and bags and such... But yeah, Spanish is clearly less exotic than French, because it makes people think of sombreros and stuff. I think.
