I recently heard about an outfit from Detroit called DEATH, three brothers who apparently came up with punk on their own years before the Sex Pistols or any of the usual suspects. But nobody ever heard of them, because no record label would sign them, because they refused to change their name from DEATH

"The Mountebanks" was one of the operettas Gilbert did without his usual collaborator Arthur Sullivan. It seems that for years upon years he was dead-set on the idea of a play about a magical potion that turns everyone into what they pretend to be, but Sullivan always shot it down. When they notoriously split up over the "carpet quarrel" Gilbert teamed up with the other leading operettist of his day and finally got to bring his idea to the London stage.

Around 10 years ago someone linked me an 80's/90's goth rock band that I would really like to listen to again but I have never been able find the band again. Really pickles my gherkin.

Recently acquired: a recording of Alfred Cellier's "Dorothy".

This is gravely disappointing. "The Mountebanks" was delightful and even sometimes brilliant, but apparently you can only achieve those heights when working with W.S. Gilbert and/or being on your deathbed from tuberculosis.

For some reason this show was massively popular (more so than "The Mikado" among others running at the same time), and even financed the construction of a new theatre from its proceeds. I really don't understand Victorians.
