So, then, here's my report!
Bara wa, bara wa UTSUKUSHIKU CHIRU
I saw Hizaki, Kamijo, Juka and Kaya live, together on stage. Top that.
Okay, people. Clees took me to a secret live and when I figured out what it was I nearly fell over. A live with three vocalists and a guitarist? How in frickin’ hell is THAT gonna work?
But that’s what is said.
Kaya, Kamijo, Juka and Hizaki?!!!! No, seriously!
((This report is not spellchecked in any way whatsoever!))
So, even though we were getting in wayyyy at the end, the venue was rather small and that wasn’t a problem. We totally screwed up putting our stuff into lockers and gave up on that bit, just taking our stuff with us. So, we stood there shoulder to shoulder with the Japanese people, some Swedish and an American (with her mom) in front of us, I was holding my new coat, Clees was carrying her little bag and her jacket. Even though we had gotten in late and fought with the lockers, we still had a lot of waiting time until the live started. Classical music was playing… a few guitar chords here and there… We were staring at a black curtain of a small stage.
I don’t remember what sort of intro music played when the curtains parted after two very familiar voices had spoken their intro (Kamijo and Kaya, I believe) They revealed a small stage with two giant red curtains in the back, a drumset, two sets of amps to the left of right, a staircase in the middle and a good handful of roses. I laughed… yes, surely, Kamijo had had his hand in this, right?
The two red curtains were parted and held aside, leaving only a black curtain in the back.
And through that black curtain stepped, to the top of the little podium with the stairs – a fluffily skirted white figure with white hair, a white face, white, elbow-long silk gloves and a white ornament on his head, legs revealed: Kaya!
His fluffy, feminine self burst into a song, dancing and gesturing wildly across the stage, the rose he held quickly disappearing in the audience. Oh, Kaya, he is a special dancer.
His eleborate hand movements were proof of his very feminine side and rather elegent. He also has the most innocent look under his fake lashes and surely his fake boobs under the white corset didn’t help things. After his performance, Kaya left the stage and for a moment, everything was silent.
Once again, the curtains parted and a lady stepped out – or was it? I suppose his name was Yuu-san, as I heard people call it (on the list, it’s a kanji I don’t know) and he was dressed in an elaborate black and red dress with roses and accessory in his hair, lots of curly hair attachments, even more make up and rhine stones on his face. The little historical French-whore outfit was displayed in a song-long dance across the stage, as s/he was holding his/her little basket and red flowers. Occassionally some presents (small white flowers, I believe?) made their way into the audience.
Yet, the curtains parted again and who would step out in a long black coat, laced with gold along the edges and shoulders, black lips and blond hair? Juka! He introduced his little French accessory-lady-guy as “Jazuminu!”… of course my Japanese is rotten, so I think he introduced her as belonging to him. Juka, too, gave a song-performance at his best which had a much darker tone and more screaming attached to it than Kaya’s. It might be at this or a later point that he introduced himself as “Darkness”.
In any case, after the two of them left the stage and a moment of pause, our next hero entered the set: Hizaki. He wore a red dress with lots of glitter, hois blond hair poofed a little in the back to a nice, rounded hairdo. His eyelashes shimmered golden and his red guitar rounded up the picture. He gave a guitar solo in a graceful style, trying to make a feminine appearance with his movements and looks and mostly succeeding. He made a rather shy and quiet impression, unlike his guitar playing.
Once more the curtain would open after Hizaki left, revealing the last of the four masters! Kamijo! Dressed in an outfit very similar to Juka, just blue instead of black (I am SURE you have seen photos of Kamijo in this), Kamijo looked like he had brushed himself up, then fallen asleep and gotten up right before the show (sorry, Kamijo!). His blond hair was mostly shoulder-length, slightly wavey and he wore a thin blond ponytail in the back which might or might not have been fake. It was bound roughly with a hairband. His face was paled with white foundation and pale lipstick, the make up around his eyes was probably blue but from where I was barely noticeable.
Of course, Kamijo made a grand entrance with Bara wa ustukushiku chiru, causing the audience to fall into happy parapara and wave the roses they had brought in all sorts of colors – mostly red, but there were also light and dark blue ones. Kamijo, of course, had his own fake blue rose to carry around and enjoy.
I am not ENTIRELY sure of the order of events and whatnot because my head hurts and my memory is lame enough to forget after the concert and not think of remembering it at all costs for the report. Anyway, I think the curtain closed eventually (maybe Kaya had another song or so… really, my head is mashed potatoes) and when it opened again, a guest band made an appearance called “Sugar”. Clees and I fell in love with the guitarist, though their music was basically mediocre and the vocalist tried way too hard, being so scantily clad and wanting to be sexy NO MATTER WHAT. The guitarist, however, was someone we had to quickly remain hide II – his faces and energy, his little spins, jumps and turns and the way he moved and acted and never stood still just reminded us too much of hide. His face looked a lot like hide’s, too! He was pure joy to watch. His hair was brown, poofed up and his clothes glittered black. The bassist had earlier worn some sort of fishnet around his mouth, but quickly lost it. Most of the time he stood there and played and – to be honest – we didn’t even notice any sort of drummer there (and I didn’t see the drumset move, either… but apparantly they have a fourth band member for something). The vocalist’s tight pants hung way too low, giving free view at a long belly that seemed to lack a navle, though that might have been covered by the black corset that was covering a good deal of his upper body (unfortunately not enough for my taste). Chains from the corset lead to a collar around his neck. His black hair was braided in horizontal stripes around the right side of his head to the back, from where on it hung down all along his side. His other side only got a strand that hung in his face. His elaborate black eye-make up, like a glittering butterfly around his left eye was therefore mostly covered by black hair with two blond strands in it. He tried hard. To dance sexily… while his guitarist was goofing off and his bassist APPARANTLY didn’t care about much at all. Their music? Just another visual kei band, it felt to me, with songs that severely lacked structure. But some people liked it, so I guess they were okay and just a little mismatched.
After their few songs (four or five?) we moved back to our main plot! And a plot it was indeed! We would never have guessed that we were in the middle of a rock theatre performance of some sort, but we were! Starting off with Kamijo in his prince-like attire (when he had his coat off, you could see the frilly renaissance collar with the blue stone and the puffy, frilly sleeves even better, topped by a vest with gold and blue and black boots covering most of his white pants up to his knees) and … Kaya, the princess.
Ah, Kamijo, with a heartfelt song and dramatical words (it IS Kamijo just as you imagine him, indeed!) tried to woe the white princess Kaya! Ah, she had brought him tea and when he first noticed her beautiful appearance, he could not help but yell out
BONJOUR HONEY!!
(no, I am totally not kidding, though it seemed he was making fun of himself)
He, named “light”, tried the tea and made some funny comments about it, though I did not quite understand. Obviously tea-drinking x microphone didn’t work too well, which was why the flowery cup was empty and Kamijo would have spilled it all over the right side of his costume, had it not been! Ah,… they sat down together, Kaya and Kamijo, as he sang her (er… him!) his love song and, almost close to kissing, she (he!) cradled his head in her (his!) lap (and Kamijo got to cuddle Kaya some, too). He had flattering words for Kaya (they sang a duett), but alas, was rejected! “You understand nothing!” … and while he was still calling out to the white princess Kaya, she had left, leaving him surprised at the suddenly empty stage!
Next, Juka appeared in stage, equally interested in woeing the white princess Kaya, but with different methods! He was darkness after all and his duett, though carrying the same melody for Kaya, had a quite different feel to it. And alas, he, too, was rejected by the princess with the same words “You do not understand!”.
I think Kaya had another solo at this point. His solos are grand, I tell you! He is an awesome singer, we cannot deny that, but the show is just great. It’s not just his girly, elaborate hand movements… at some point he did the “mechanical doll” movements during an instrumental part and at other points he most literally imitated a ballerina (and didn’t such a bad job at is). This has got to be the most feminine and (dare I say it?) cute guy on the frickin’ planet.
So, the question who gets Kaya was still left open when Kamijo and Juka have a fateful meeting! Darkness (Juka) said Kaya should be his, but Kamijo could not let that happen! There is light in darkness, after all, but Juka denied it – he was darkness and ONLY darkness! It had to happen – the two of them battle! Kamijo, supported by his number one duel tool THE FAKE PLASTIC ROSE (oh Kamijo, I love you!) battled the master of darkness, whose servant (hide II!!) handed him a plastic axe with a skull carved into it, to battle the unwanted rival – the light (Kamijo)!
What a fierce battle! And as fate wants it, KAYA turns up in the middle of it, shocked to see this gruesome fight taking place about him!!! He runs down to the battleground to stop the two fighters, JUST as Juka attacks and ALAS
HE KILLS KAYA!
The curtains fall closed as the poor white princess sinks to the floor, her/his princes of dark and light rushing to his/her aid, but alas, alas! It’s all too late! Kaya is dead.
At that point, the lights in the hall came on and we were a LITTLE confused. Nobody moved, though, which made sense, because why would it end without people taking their bows? Why would it end already anyway.
We stood there for a while, unable to move, due to people everywhere… but we had magically edged closer to the stage. Clees and I were separated by a Japanese girl in a white outfit who hopped in her spot nervously.
As the curtains opened again, we figured out why. The second guest band was about to perform, and she obviously believed she was their biggest fan! She knew the parapara by heart and performed it regardless of anyone around her. So did five other people in the audience.
The band’s name was Kinaru… their singer was a goat. Well, he sounded like one, at least… and was generally a bit too hyper to be healthy. It was probably the worst Japanese band I’ve sene live in my life. Granted, I haven’t seen so many live, but … holy cow. Obviously they must have something because their handful of fans went crazy (and the bassist with his black face mask was truly talented), but I found myself wishing they’d finish soon – and “last song” was a magic code to set me back to life. The drummer was kind of cute – he had blond hair with a curly hair extension on the side and butterflies in his hair. His eye make up looked like he was bleeding out of his eye. The guitarist gave a nice performance… frankly, without the hyperactive vocalist, this could have been something. But the hyperactivity also showed in the use of his voice and that wa sreally annoying. I can’t describe it… He seemed a little like he tried to sing like Shakira who also sometimes launches into that higher voice – but opposite of her, he kind of failed it. Well, that’s just my opinion. I was happy when the curtain closed again and tried to concentrate on the bassist and his cool, black hair and black face mask.
When the curtain opened again, Juka stood lonely on the top of the stairs, light shining at him. Kaya’s voice, accompanied by an echo to prove how DEAD he is, spoke to him. Juka said he had finally understood, as Kaya had wanted him to and offered a love song to the dead white princess – the song was named “Aravesque” (and is basically Juka’s single that comes out this month). I don’t remember too much of it – it sounded pretty nice, not spectacular.
Next was Kamijo, making a similar confession to Kaya, also offering a love song in apology (or so). His song was called something with “P____”, but I wasn’t quite sure whether or not it was supposed to be English or so… I thought it might have been “Prelude”, but then I figured I might be mistaken. In any case, Kamijo sang his song to the dead Kaya and left the stage.
The curtains parted again and there was a chinese umbrella in a lavender color, twirling to reveal nothing more but two legs clad in dark socks and boots (legs that were obviously Kaya’s but we pretended we did not know that). And alas, when the umbrella sunk, it revealed Kaya with his white hair but in a completely new costume. His hair-accessory-hat thing was now purple with a purple bow-tie and his dress black and red with a corset and the same, frilly petticoat-like skirt. His arms were covered in sleeves that seemed to be taken from a kimono. They were pink with white flowers on them and fell down long along his arms. His white silk gloves had been exchanged for black ones.
WHY Kaya was back among the living is beyond me, I probably didn’t understand it if there was a point to it. Kaya’s little speeches seemed pretty hard to catch and my imagination is limited. In any case, Kaya had another song for us (and I think at this and other points, Hizaki appeared as a guitarist to accompany the song – for other songs, Jazuminu was playing bass as well). Once finished, making wonderful use of his pretty sleeves as he moved around most gracefully, Kamijo and Juka were back as well and it all turned into a happy singing festival with the three vocalists, Hizaki and Jasmin on stage. The other bands’ members came on stage as well, but in their mostly dark and black costumes and completely not done up to play in the stories, they seemed to feel a little misplaced. There, the guy who is apparantly Sugar’s fourth member appeared, too – we saw him for the first time and only realized he was part of the Sugar when we saw an ad later on.
The curtain fell, the lights went on… and we waited again. We heard people screaming names, mostly Juka’s and Kaya’s (I felt bad for Kamijo, really – Hizaki at least hadn’t had a major role in the play).
When the curtain rose again after the lights had died out, Juka, Kaya, Kamijo and Hizaki returned to the stage to advertise for upcoming singles and releases, performances of the two guest bands, etc. I specifically remember them announcing that
Kamijo and Hizaki are forming a new band and that we should please buy Juka’s single Aravesque, coming this March… and Kaya had something to advertise for, too – an album or a single or a live, I don’t remember. Keep in mind, I don’t speak Japanese – and they just talked on forever and forever, so that Clees couldn’t remember everything she picked up, either.
In any case, while they were holding their monologues (mostly Kamijo, in that sweet, dramatic, romantic, host-like voice of his), Kamijo kissed Kaya on the cheek or something and the audience spasmed… afterwards they didn’t listen to him anymore, so he asked whether he’d have to kiss them to get their attention and blew a kiss into the audience. Since it worked, he advised Juka to do the same, but it took a good deal of convincing for Juka to do it… and once he was done, Juka realized “Hey, why do only I get to do it? Shouldn’t Kaya do it, too?” … so with lots of yelling and stuff, Kaya had to be convinced, too.
Kaya has the most GIRLY laugh on the planet. He was all shy and sweet and laughing when he was supposed to do such an embarassing thing or when Kamijo, still somewhat unable to step out of his character, tried to flatter him. I have no idea what exactly happened, but at some point Juka literally ran away from Kamijo and hid behind Kaya.
Also, at some point Juka did an imitaiton of Kamijo’s .. flamboyant way of talking which Kamijo commented with “Please don’t do that,” and returned an impression of Juka’s evil, dramatic voice… which was quite perfect. At this point I might mention that Kamijo referred to himself a “boku”, Juka as “ore” and Kaya as “watakushi”. XD It was perfect.
At some point we had to call Hizaki on stage and Jasmin joined to. There were picture-esque moments in which the “girls” (Jasmin, Hizaki and Kaya) stood with the boys, or were hooked up to their arms or cuddling or whatever – while they still kept on talking (mostly Kamijo). Juka occassionally threw a word or two in, which had the audience go “EEEE????” a couple of times because apparantly nobody understood what he was saying. Sometimes he said something (about his single for example) and other times he tried to say something and then it ended in another “eeee?!” and he gave up on it. At least it seemed that way.
Kaya also commented on his costume which was new, or self-made or so – and he twirled a couple of times to earn obligatory, high-pitched “kawaii~~~!”s from the audience.
Eventually, the music restarted and we got another performance of “Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru”, this time with all three vocalist taking their part in the song. Juka seemed a bit rough for the song, as my impression goes, but he looked really pretty singing it. He also couldn’t finish one of his lines because Jasmin attacked him and nearly threw him over (I couldn’t figure out whether Jasmin was trying to kiss Juka or not).
At the very end, the song had three different voices, Kaya taking on the highest (and damn, that was high), Juka the lowest and Kamijo inbetween. It sounded really rather pretty and they kept changing position on stage to make a pretty, memorable picture – involving the stairs and the sides of the stage and all. Of course Hizaki was playing and Jasmin as well and there were lots of roses that were thrown into the audience during that song.
When the curtain closed this time, the show was over for certain.
That was quite surprising – especially when your girlfriend doesn’t tell you where you are going and then you get Juka, Kamijo AND Kaya at the same time. And Kaya, who should really be called ‘she’ is just too fluffy to not want to cuddle. So, if you ever can, please get hugs from Kaya.
And for all those who wonder: Yes, Kamijo IS just like that. I don’t know how the hell he manages, but only Kamijo can be that way, really. The way he talks and acts is so magically flamboyant and elegant, it totally beats Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club.
And frankly, I never cared about Hizaki too much before, but the guy is really sweet and has wonderful guitar skills. He seemed so shy and his roll in the background so much, but he gives out these neat, heartwarming rays. I want to pat him (I am weird, I know).
Lastly, Juka – he has changed in interesting ways. He seems more confident now, though not completely mature – if that makes sense. If he’s going to continue as a musician, he seems to have a few miles to walk, still. He was sort of the kid on stage that was lead around by the more experienced (even though that’s kind of odd to say about Kaya…). But he fought bravely and he sure has proven his voice’s worth.
Also, I wonder whether Mana was there. With Juka, Kamijo and Kaya performing, he should at least have a look at it? The VIP area was on the balcony right above us, though. Unless you stood in front of the stage, there was no chance in seeing anyone up there. Clees and I were directly beneath it.
Alltogether, this was a unique experience… which I never thought even EXISTED to experience. I am blown away and I probably had the most amusing night of my life. Juka, Kaya, Kamijo and Hizaki playing theatre. WHERE else do you get that?
