I've only recently gotten into this band, they rock awesome. Can anyone tell me more about them? I've never actually seen very many photos of them, nor do I know their names, other than Tetsu. The only site i've been to is thier official. What CD is a good starting point for them? I've been listening to random tracks.

Any info is welcome.

Edit: Also lyrics too! :P

Thanks,
Priss

 Actually, there's a lot of information about them in this forum, if you do a search. But anyways...

I know nothing about the background for nil, except that it is the current project of vocalist/guitarist Takano Tetsu. Former (and original) vocalist of Malice Mizer. Just prior to nil he was in a band called Zigzo (who you may also like), coincidently with former L'Arc~en~Ciel drummer, Sakura. Apparently there's been a few members of nil... specifically a few drummers. I have no idea who they were and how amhy there have been. The official website has the band's names in English.

My favorite song by nil is "Karasu no me" from 12 Inplosion, the first full album released. It's a good starting point, I suppose. A nice, solid rock album. But I prefer the second full album, Excalibur, which was released earlier this year. For a starting point, I reccomend their newest release, a mini-album Scherzo, though.

I don't have any translated lyrics by them (Although I would love to see a translation of songs like "Karasu no me" and "Drop"), but I have scans of the Scherzo booklet if anyone wants to take a shot at translating the lyrics!

Thanks for all that. I did do a search first, but I mostly found release information. I've heard Zigzo before, but I think I like nil better. It's straight rock that sounds very good.

I've heard samples of Scherzo, and I like it alot! If I hear more, I'll definately buy it.

Again, thanks for the info.

Tears are not the only things falling.

nil started after Mega8Ball ended in 1997. Several concerts were performed in 1998 with it's founding members Moro Kyoshi (d), Kashimoto 'Marawo' Hiroyuki (b), and Tetsu Takano (v, gt).

Tetsu eventually left, disbanded, or put aside (the reasons are unknown) nil as a project in 1999 when he joined Zigzo. nil had composed several songs which later became classic Zigzo tracks, himawari, nani kara nani made, and sleep. The latter resurfaced in nil lives in 2004's 12 inplosion tour as 'deep sleep' as well as other instances of lives.

Zigzo eventually ended in March of 2002, most likely because Tetsu wanted to get away from the mainstream spotlight and the rigors of major label meddling) and nil restarted shortly thereafter. The original members reformed and by the year's end two mini albums were released, nil from hell and Sayonara Da Vinci.

On January 10th 2005 Marawo and Moro left the band for reasons unknown, but I've come to speculate that it was the more mainstreet rock direction of the band which turned the other two off.

Two new members joined in April 2005, Furuton (ex Oblivion Dust, current Hyde solo drummer) and Kobayashi (ex Sads). All seemed well and a 6 gig tour for nil's Excalibur album went off nicely in June.

And recently, 2 mini albums, Scherzo and Agape were recorded and released within almost 6 months of Excalibur. Furuton recently left the band most likely because of his previous (and more lucrative) relationship with Hyde (L'arc en ciel's vocalist).

A new drummer was found in time for the Scherzo tour which started on November 11th featuring most of songs off of Scherzo, Agape, Excalibur, and some past oldies.

My recommendation for nil albums is:

(2nd mini album) Sayonara Da Vinci
(1st album) 12 inplosion

The first being a little more indie and the latter being more out-and-out rock

I've been sitting on a dozen or two nil song translations for quite a while, some done by myself and some done by a friend. I've been meaning to make a nil page for years but have never gotten around to it. And I'll be translating Scherzo's lyrics soon as those are relatively easy compared to other nil songs. But for now, here's drop:

----------------------------------
Drop
----------------------------------

The pitch black night has finally arrived
The deep red world has been wrapped up
It's too late to hide It's too late to hide
The pitch black night has finally arrived

I can't hold back the strumming of this guitar
I can't hold back the flowing of this song

The struggling is countless
The rewards are counting the limits

The thirsty river is fissuring down below
It's only the flow of time watching

Tears are not the only things falling
Tears are not the only things falling

Finally it's the pitch black of night
The deep red field of view envelopes me
It's too late to hide It's too late to hide
The pitch black night has finally arrived

The dry skin is cracking to the core
It's only the flow of time watching

Tears are not the only things falling
Tears are not the only things falling.

Feel free to ask any questions about nil if you have any!

Hehe, thanks for the info; it's hard to find anything on nil in English.

You wouldn't happen to have Sayonara da Vinci translated, would you? I love that song so much.

I also love Himawari; I had no idea that that was originally composed for nil.

Written about (and possibly on) 9/11/2001. Thanks to my friend k1412 for this translation.

============================================
Sayonara Da Vinci
---------------------------------
A small flower is blooming in the corner of a vacant land
Blooming in a land that suddenly became vacant

I've lied, I'm standing on top of regret
Standing on top of asphalt hardened with lies

A plane accompanied by a cloud
flies so boastful
through the sky
The sky is so light blue, the wind is just blowing
Since long ago it was just blowing

Every thing that can be seen is evolving
Every thing that can't be seen is evolving

A rocket is falling from the sky
Falling to the city next to us

The hole created in the night sky A wish to the stars in the sky

The light that shined a long time ago is now shining upon me
I wished upon the stars for the happiness of this star just for tonight

I want to meet you right now.

 Thanks for the info and translations! I had kind of been aware that nil had started before Zigzo, but I didn't know the details. That's very cool. :)

Thanks for the translations, as well.

The lyrics to Sayonara da Vinci are very, VERY interesting. So they were written about 9/11? I never knew that. This isn't the first song Tetsu's written about a terrible tragedy and disaster, that is all BUT natural; the victims and the guilty are both nothing more than mere humans. Kioku to Sora, way back in 1994 (when it was released on memoire, I mean) dealt with the same issues, in particular the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. To compare the two events would be unthinkable, and I'm not, but they do have in common the theme of pointless mass death of people brought upon by their own kind.

And by nil's merchandise alone, we know Tetsu's affinity for world love and peace ;)

Here's his diary posting from 2002.09.11 which he dates as 2001:

http://web.archive.org/web/200308271356 ... #2002.9.11

Left out of the lyrics on his journal and in the cd booklet are the words sung near the end. I cry does not seem to be on the recorded song though. It's hard to tell.

"I fly
I die
I cry"

Hearing him sing it live where he's singing with all of his voice is quite amazing. I've come to think that this song and Sayonara Da Vinci the mini album were the specific reason why he left zigzo and restarted nil, masterful beyond words. It was something he couldn't do as Zigzo.

But yeah, his lyrics are laced with world peace messages:
'Now we need a perfect peace' as he says on the opening track of 12 inplosion.

For the longest time I've had the translation of sayonara davinci but never recalled the fact that he wrote it in reference to 9/11. Alot of his songs are written with the idea of love and peace, it may seem like a broken record but it's something he's concerned about and expresses in music which is part of what keeps me interested in his work.

I wonder if a nil subsite could be part of scape? That would probably be easier to update for us nil fans in a wikipedia sort of way.

At the moment -scape- is on hiatus and not updating at all. So, no new sites are going to be added at the moment. I'm really not sure what's in the future in that regard; in the past all the updates were done by LejuN.

Ow wow, Sayonara da Vinci is even more beautiful, now that I know what he's singing. Thanks again for providing us a translation. (:

nil interview

hmm pity about not being able to add a nil site to scape, it was something I thought about earlier but never pursued.

A new 5 minute interview with nil on cddata was uploaded on 11/14/2005, the yousendit link has the high quality file for direct download, thanks goes out to those Japanese blogs who find this stuff before I do. Tetsu and Masaru talk about the current tour, furuton leaving (very briefly), and the new release of Scherzo and Agape.

Thanks for the video, but I have to say... XDDD

Tetsu must have been celebrating a "Jamaican Christmas" prior to recording  I've never seen a man so amused by lighters!

the other guy in the video is masaru kobayashi, the current bassist, formerly of Sads. The drummer right now is only a session drummer so he probably won't be shown in photos and such.

heh, didn't think about the jamaican x-mas, but I wouldn't doubt it.

Tetsu is undoubtedly high in that interview, lol. He can't keep a straight face for more than 15 seconds.

I have a question regarding ni's discography...was a PV collection ever released? I recall hearing about one but it's not listed anywhere on their OHP or anything. I don't even know all the PVs they've made.... I have Placebo and Inplosion teenage girl but that's it.

Yeah, the PV thing was released. They have it in their "Mongolian Shop" on hte ohp, although it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere else. http://www.afro-skull.com/mongolianshop/shop_01.html#1

I've only seen Inplosion Teenage Girl and Placebo myself, as well. Although... You have just got to love the video for Placebo.

I wish I could find a complete recording of the new PV for A-HA-HA.

np.

It's interesting to note, that both Marawo and Moro went to the recent Kozi live. Those guys are not the visual kei types, and aren't in any vk bands, so I suspect they came as friends of kozi. In nil's biography it had said tetsu met the two around 1992, so it could've been when he was in Malice Mizer, I thought maybe it was when he was in nervous.
