Is anyone familiar with Merzbow's books?
My friend's birthday is coming up soon and I wanted to get her something on fetishism in Japan and thought one of his books might be appropriate, but I'm having a hard time finding anything on the contents of them.

Okay, real talk.... I've finally been coming out of my shell to tweet the boys... I know they speak/understand English quite well (well, duhhhh).... but I kinda feel like a jerk tweeting them in English... But I'd also feel like a jerk trying in Japanese, as I haven't studied/exercised it diligently since high school... My question is how accurate is Google translating English-to-Japanese (I already know how horrendous it looks the other way around, but I can at least still decode it)? Or should I just stick to what I know and hope for the best?
It should get the basic point across but GT totally fails when it comes to nuance, levels of respect and complicated sentences. It's very much a literal translation which doesn't always code well at all in Japanese...
Which boys? The Malice Mizer ones know they have a lot of fans outside of Japan, same with a lot of musicians. Given how familial a lot of the Twitter comments are from most Japanese fans, I would not worry too much about the language respect level unless it's a request or something that needs a more formal phrasing. Simpler sentences tend to work better with machine translation. I actually use Google but then I have a couple others that I go back and check everything, sometimes I look for a different word in Japanese that fits better, mess with punctuation and so on in hopes that my meaning is understandable.
Since it's Twitter and if your Twitter account has your location outside of Japan, and you can even say you are trying to translate into Japanese, most are pretty understanding.
Even if I am using machine translating, I have found I am learning a bit. I'm also having a bit of fun now and again putting things into Katakana when someone like Közi tweets (he uses it way too much) or just to split the difference, writing in French, lol.
But whatever you do, stay away from Bing translating. It's terrible that Twitter uses it for their translation. Just awful.
Oh and it's almost Közi's birthday!
Also to add to this, Yu~ki was on Twitter the other day talking about how he went back to his old tailor for a new outfit for Deep Sanctuary. He's rarely on there but at least the Malice Mizer reunions get him wanting to be sociable. It's nice.

That's very refreshing... and yes, Yu~ki's tweets set my heart a-flutter. I'm so happy he's in good spirits and doing what he clearly loves (and missed after so long) doing so much.
I've noticed Közi's usage of katakana, too. It has me tilting my head like, "Is that right? " (I still remember that much from my schooling days...) but Yes! Birthday boy must have his respects paid! You think he'll like random pictures of my cat? (Hahaha)

Yeah, I've had my Japanese friends try to say something to me with Google Translate and it has come out completely incomprehensible.
Although I was at the police station last week and used the speech to text with the officer and it was flawless, so that was surprising.
I've also seen a lot of Japanese people use a 'Weblio' app, which produces even stranger results than Google translate.
I prefer Bing translate over google translate, the website is slow but it usually gives me a better result than Google.
In other news, I'm always surprised by how little Japanese people know about other countries. I did a lesson involving Japanese folk-tales recently and my Japanese coworker asked me if we have Momotaro, Urashima Taro etc. in Australia, he was so shocked when I told him that those are Japanese stories...
I've also had coworkers ask about yakisoba, ramen etc. in Australia and they are so shocked when I tell them that those are Japanese foods, so we need to go to a Japanese restaurant to eat them.
and we don't have shinto/buddhist temples either.
but Pokemon is popular, that blew their minds.
