Spinning off from the shopping thread: given the prevalence of fakes these days, I'm starting up a list of known cassette releases and what kind of tapes they originally came on!

    The Rules
    1. Any official release is OK to list, whether it's a fake or not. Just mark it with your confidence level.
    2. Duplicate entries are OK since we are cataloguing what's out there. I'll just mark exact duplicates with an "x2" or something.
    3. Don't list one-of-a-kind items like studio working tapes or live bootlegs, since there's no point.
    4. Confidence levels should be marked roughly as follows:
High: Anything you personally bought directly from the artists; tapes bought from the most reputable Japanese stores (Third Stage, Puresound, Flower Record); tapes obtained new in shrinkwrap; tapes that have something about them that makes counterfeiting difficult.
Medium: Tapes that are not "high-value targets" for counterfeiting, and appear legitimate on their face.
Low: "High-value targets"; anything japametal or sold alongside japametal; anything released before 1994.
Fake: Anything that is counterfeit, or almost certainly so; anything from a notorious seller of fakes.
You can bump the confidence level up (or down) based on your own judgement. We're all presumably old hands at this by now.

I did up a few of my own tapes and attached it in an Excel sheet here. (This version of XenForo doesn't support tables and upgrading appears to be a major undertaking) Take a look and see what you think - if there's interest and people want to contribute I'll do more as well.

Great idea! Why not also add what kind of tape plastic case was included? The more round or the more rectangle/angular ones. Also if there's a brand like the "Sony" logo on the plastic cassette case it would be interesting to note. And maybe add a seperate section for the lyrics card, if it is included or not, instead of in details.

Would it actually help anyone? There seem to be a million kinds of subtly different tape cases and they don't have names or anything. I'm not sure you could even tell them apart from an auction photo. Besides, I would think 99% of the time the type of case is just "Whatever came with that brand of tape".

I edited in a new copy of the sample sheet to the first post in this thread, with the lyrics sheet info separated out to its own column, and also a new column for # of copies pressed (not that it's known for most of the ones in the sample)

Any takers, anyone going to join in?

Interesting stuff. While I only have a few demo tapes myself and don't actively search for many, I would be too afraid to buy any demo tape from popular bands because of the odds that they would be fake.

Of course, it's easy to be suspicious when a YJA or mercari seller magically has all of the rarest tapes one could dream of. But then it's hard to spot them when they only post very specific rare tapes occasionally one at a time.
Would it also be helpful to make a 'blacklist' of such sellers?

You know it doesn't show up as a "new post" if you edit things in, right? XD I didn't even see this until now. I'll merge this into the main list in a bit.
    Thanks
    Some general notes:
"Variant and Pressing" should be used only for official releases (different colors/versions/etc) Anything fake will clearly be one-of-a-kind.
I sort of want to avoid "combination" confidence rankings like medium/high. If in doubt let's put it at medium. High is intended for things with solid provenance, things that make it physically hard to duplicate (like a pink cassette tape), or some sort of special feature that wasn't common knowledge and a bootlegger wouldn't have known about.

Also, what's the deal with the "overwritten" tape?

Absolutely, although I think there are only a few "regulars" like qld96 who sell fakes en masse.
Generally the big fake sellers are pretty obvious because they sell japametal demos.

    Oops, sorry.
Sorry about that! I should have "fixed" the confidence, etc., now.

Well, I bought this tape off Biopanda, who in turn had bought a lot off Yahoo containing this tape. The inserts look... fine, if a bit used, but the tape contained a partial Buck-Tick (or a B-T cover band) live. Can be uploaded if for the lulz if you want.

Could it just have been some other tape that got swapped into the case?
I dunno, this is a weird enough situation that I think we might just want to leave it out, I don't think anyone could make a buying decision based off of it XD

Anyway, I merged the rest into the list in the top post. I edited the comments a bit too, we can let the audience decide for themselves what is "obscure".

Possible. But all the other copies of this tape that I've seen sell have had the same tape stock. Let's do that if you find that that's the best option.

Great. And as for the "obscure" stuff, you're completely right. But I'm not lying about the MARIA tape, I promise.. :P
