Played the first one (infection). It was a lot of fun if you're into grinding, but there's no reason it had to be split up on four disks. Play it if you can get them all for cheap. Heard the newer games are pretty sick though.
I've only played parts 1 and 3, but it's just like what Einherjer mentioned before about game grinding. I must admit, I always got giddy whenever I got a new email when playing because I need to know that the NPC's must like me. And it also opens up certain character sidequests and such.
