I like some of his solo songs, but others are um.... too pop-ish for me. I think he should sing opera. o^^o His voice sounds awesome when he sings like that.

Actually, in my very humble opinion, Klaha's voice does not sound well-trained... it could be called faux-operatic at best. Vibrato should not be that frenzied, should not really sound that way, but in Malice Mizer it worked somehow.

So (taking the discussion slightly OT but I hope you won't hold it against me)... both of you mentioned the notion of a "well-trained" voice; in general what do you look for in a voice that's well-trained?

Well, I think Kaya's voice for example is well trained. Don't get me wrong, I love Klaha :D I love his voice, and he fits Malice Mizer, and opera music in general very well. It's just that his voice isn't very 'powerful' and varieted. He can't sing *very* low or high or fast, like Gackt or Kaya can.
Also, once the music starts, or when he sings with a choir in the background you won't notice, but in the beginning of Kiseki no Koe, till 0:43, in which he sings a cappella, his singing is not very great(o how much I hate admitting it ;_; ) ^^;
in fact..if it would have been sung by the Cheeky Girls(or insert another random popular but horrible artist ;)) my opinion would have been "Ugh....dying cow x_X *throws cd out of of the window* but I know that Klaha can do better. (And *has* done better stuff) :)

Flowers: Asking questions and facilitating discussion like that is why you rock.

Well, sure: I can't claim to know anyone's musical schooling, but, to say a name at random, Gackt sounds well-trained. He has a nice tone, a vibrato that does seem to equal Klaha's for speed, but in no means does it make his voice sound shaky. As I listen to Klaha's 1st album, I hear lots of 'shaky'. And that makes the music sound like it'll derail at any moment.

Finding a well-trained voice in Western music may be a little harder; perhaps a good example is the late Freddy Mercury (Queen). He had a pure tone, could through some slight roughness on it when necessary, exercised his range, etc.

WARNING OMFG CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT AHEAD: I could even argue that Tetsu uses vibrato better than Klaha does. I think my main problem is that K-man's vibrato doesn't give a phrase any...um...phrasing; he simply uses it constantly throughout a vocal line. Tetsu, Gackt, and Mercury all know to save it for a long note or for the end of a phrase.

Of course, this is all moot if the music ain't good, ain't it? ;)

Anyway, hope that clarifies my position.

I was about to post about Tetsu too! He is a very "good" singer with lots of range :) He just runs his vocals through a filter of mannerisms that can push people away. Although range by itself, or "the pipes", are a bit of a bad meter of how trained a voice is, as all singers eventually come face to face with their physique. Gackt is all physique :D

Anyway, "trained" voices and singers generally press the wrong button in me, I usually dislike singing as high culture / art by default. Classical music turns me off most of the time - opera singers are too stuck up in their vibratos to notice what is exciting most of the time...

Klaha's way of crunching his way through lyrics fit a perverse deviation of classical music superbly, but in normal circumstances he's not that talented :) Still, I admire the tone and colour of his voice and love what he did on Gardenia to bits, for instance. It fit. When people find their thang, that's when things start to rock.

When I need to tell someone a good, uh, "rock" vocalist I either say Jeff Buckley or Jimmy Gnecco (the Ours). Neither are "trained" per se, but pretty good nevertheless.

My opinion:
<opinion>Klaha has the best tone, but his vibrato is constant, and therefore...eh. Unique delivery.
Gackt's vibrato can go into tremolo ranges at times, but his tone is nice as well. His range and falsetto are lovely.
Juka's tone isn't as good as Gackt's, but his vibrato is right on.
Kaya's tone isn't as good as Gackt's either, but his vibrato is perfect and his delivery is better than Juka's. Excellent range, but his falsetto isn't as strong as Gackt's per say.

When you consider age and voice development, Kaya could very possibly end up the best. But for now, I'd give Gackt the vote.</opinion>

This should explain everything...well, no. I'm just posting it somewhere it shouldn't be to bother Flowers ^^ It's my interpretation of current.

I think Gackt's definitely got the most control in his voice...I dunno. I like Kaya's tendency to get those popish girl things. I don't know what they're called, but Betty Boop did them alot. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think Klaha has a great voice. I do agree that his vibrato got out of control often, but the haunting quality of his voice worked so well with Malice Mizer's sound. I do think that Gackt had more control, and is the better singer. None the less, I like Klaha better!

Juka was so awsome at the very end of his time with m10m. I respect him greatly becuase he was good on Dix Infernal, but, unlike most singers, he kept pushing his voice to a new level. Every recording was better than the last and at his last live, he was my favorite japanese singer.

Well since this has already been risen from its grave, I'll take advantage of it to put in my two cents.

I think that Klaha's vibrato is sometimes used in places where it definitely should be without, but it's hard to say that this is due to his own lack of artistic vision/talent. I think that when you take into consideration the way Mana is with vocalists, Klaha was probably specifically instructed to use vibrato the way he does to give the music a sort of pseudo-creepy feel. Granted, I could be wrong, I just doubt that Mana would have let any recordings slide if he wasn't 100% satisfied with the vocals. I also think that Klaha's use of vibrato is effective in setting the mood (like the beginning of Shiroi is a good example). I've never had the impression that it might derail; I've thought that it was kind of overdone at points, but his voice always seemed in control to me.

That explenation works for me. Though I do believe that Klaha sang the way he wanted to and Mana aproved, I could also be wrong. Who knows but them?
