So I've really been wondering about this. Please answer honestly, even if it takes thinking for a few minutes first.

If you haven't started learning Japanese and plan to, then think about why you plan to.

Learning Japanese just for Mana? How silly! How fangirlish!

.... now learning Japanese for *Klaha*, that is a totally serious, sober, and respectable option that has been chosen by many fine pillars of the community. ;)

I picked the "music in general" option.

EDIT: and put me down for a half-vote of "didn't like waiting for translators" too.

As per your instructions I thought for a few minutes o_o... and then came to the conclusion that I want to learn Japanese for Klaha but that's not in the options. What should I do? o_o I would stop and think about that for a few minutes too but my thinking powers are running out.

EDIT: Damn flowers XD

Edited the poll by Faith's request to add "for a specific musician" as an option. But I still want to keep my vote how it is... since I'm not ONLY interested in using Japanese for Klaha.

I chose "Because I like some other aspect of Japanese culture" because it was the closest thing to having a 'general interest in Japan'. I am not a J-phile, but many things do interest about the country, not just the pop culture. The language itself is very interesting as well.

Hmmm... I chose "other aspect of Japanese culture", though it's not entirely accurate.

I'd certainly love to be able to understand Jrock lyrics, raw animes, etc, just by listening. But more than that, I HAVE to take a language in college. I've already had 4 years of German, and I'm kind of sick of it. So when I get to college, I want to take Japanese. It's a language I'm already somewhat familar with (it's the only language I hear on a constant basis other than English, and so also would be the only language I'd have a reason to want to know), I find it amazingly interesting and intricate, and I just love the way it sounds.

So, yeah. A little bit of not wanting to wait for/hunt down trnaslations. A little bit of wanting to understand the music better. But more or less, for aesthetic reasons.

I chose "Because I like some other aspect of Japanese culture" after thinking for a bit... I've had a huge interest in Japan for my entire life, not just music / anime / video games, but really the country and culture. The same goes for China and Korea (blame my parents for making my first two schools in the heart of Chinatown). While I'd absolutely love to be able to understand Mana, other Japanese musicians' lyrics, and anime raws, there's far more things I'm interested in.

I like languages in general, and will be able to take Japanese next year. I've taken French since fourth grade and spent two years in an advanced course of French, and would really like a change of scenery, so to speak... I also recently started taking a Russian class.

.... aw, what the heck, chock me up with Flowers for a half vote of not trusting a lot of translators. Though I believe the ones here at Scape do a fine job of things. ^^

I want to [will] learn Japanese in the future. Its been a goal of mine for a long time now and I've been teaching myself slowly. Once I get into college however, I will take it upon myself to take some classes to learn Japanese and so on. The school I want to go to sadly doesn't offer language classes :\ or so I think, I still have to research that. (I want to go to an art school) So I'm very excited ^^ Not only becuase I love mana and all, but I want to understand many other things. From manga, to music, to more. So I want to have half a vote in "Because I like some other aspect of Japanese culture" too ^^;

I learned Japanese on a whim, and now it's too late to turn back! :-P

As for the translations thing i.e. listening to music or pop culture or whatever... it's the reverse for me. I didn't learn the language with the goal of one day understanding music or movies, but I use music and movies as a tool to train my ear and my quickness and fluency. It should be at a point where I'm not translating into English but listening and understanding in Japanese... you know?

Also, it's the reverse again for the 'job' thing... it's not like I picked a job and said "oh, I'll need Japanese", I picked Japanese as my major in college (music and theater departments suck and the English dept. didn't have the focus I wanted) just because I at least wanted to really enjoy school in college. Through that I'm finding job opportunities that sound really cool.

Basically, I see it as expanding massively the amount of people I can form relationships and friendships and other interactions with. I mean, yeah, I like music and culture and whatever, but for me it gets down to people.

I am learning Japanese right now mainly for the music, but I am interested in many different aspects in Japan, mainly the smaller villages and towns of Japan. There are many cultural aspects that I want to learn about, but the main reason is definatly the music/manga/anime.
