Although I've been UBER busy lately.....
I needed a break, wanted to translate, and decided to chose a random day on Nomiko's diary and read it
...and it was extremely cute and mentioned Kaya, so here it is. I can't understand why she's explaining Japanese customs on her diary though.....

Today is Setsubun.
It seems setsubun is the day before the first day of winter, spring, summer, winter, and we consider the first day of spring to be the beginning of a year, and so in general it seems the spring setsubun is given the most importance.
And because of setsubun, tonight I'm going to scatter beans all over the place )mamemaki)-! It's exorcism of malicious spirits♪
And a prayer for health☆
At my house I throw peanuts.
(when I was in Shikoku we scattered roasted soybeans, but now I'm living by myself and so I asked my friends who are living alone too, and then changed it accordingly)
Until a little while ago my younger brother lived nearby, and so we'd do mamemaki together, but this year I'll be doing it by myself.....I'M LONESOME! (>_<)
Last year we made a demon face, but this year I'm all by myself and what should I do...?(^_^
I'm still agonizing.
I have all the stuff though.
...a paper bag, origami paper, and some wool.
...she could have used my hideous Dinosaur mask I made for drama because I didn't have anything but an old t-shirt and a cereal box and staples. All of which I used
EDT: So it's traditional to throw hot soy beans at a devil mask to scare the devil away. These days people throw cold ones though, and so it doesn't really matter what kind they are. So they chose the ones they like to eat best >_<
