I was torn between the second and third one, because it depends on the song or artist. I kind of learn bits and pieces as I go along, but I'm nowhere near complete understanding. So I picked number 3, since my current understanding is nowhere near good enough for me XD

I still heavily depend on lyric translation websites like whoa X_X

And Kyu had to translate part of gackt's webpage for me last night XD I fail.

For me its the sound of the music that gets me into it. I don't understand any japanese.

But because I've enjoyed malice mizer so much, its inspired me to go actually learn japanese, and I plan too.

I would know more if I didn't start studying Russian instead of focusing on my Japanese classes during High School. Either way I ended up hardly remembering anything from either language other then various words, letters/characters and pointless extra bits of information. I have a habbit of liking music from various countries in various languages though. German, Russian, Israeli, Spanish, Afrikaans and then there where a few various bands from the Pacific islands. Japan just happens to be one place easist to find out about new bands without having to speak Japanese....well at least bands that actually sing in their native language :P

I'm kind of like Lemharth.
I listen to music in lots of other languages, mainly Japanese, Spanish, Russian, French and Ukrainian. I'm mostly fluent in Spanish, then French, then Japanese then Russian and finally Ukrainian.

I've translated things from Japanese to English before, mostly Mika Nakashima stuff. I've taken classes on it too, but i'm nowhere near fluent...i'm still very much basic! I mean I wouldn't have been able to translate anything without the help of a book:P

Spanish and French are the only languages I can read without a dictionary...for the most part...and well English of course!

I understand most of the song usually. Though sometimes the lyrics are just mega complex(like Satsuki's new style in RES) and/or the singer slurs words together.

I understand pretty much all of it. I've only recently become what could be considered "fluent" as I'm brushing up on my Japanese for my next visit to Japan. Although, bands like Onmyouza sometimes sing in a almost extinct dialect.

Exactly! It doesn't even have to be metal xD That band Fall Out Boy, the singer slurs and garbles words up to the point that you can't even understand him xD

I don't have to understand the words to enjoy the music. But, I can get little bits and pieces of things. o_o just as long as they don't toss in some english in there. XD

I'm more along the lines of the last option, so I voted that. I can pick out certain words at times, though.

Even though I can't understand the majority of the lyrics, listening to so much of the music has made my ear more comfortable with the language so I can sing along with how the words sound, even if I don't exactly know them all.

Sometimes it's hard for me to pick out random english in some jrock though. XD For example, I was listening to Suicide Gemini by Phantasmagoria today and I heard the line "I want to take my life" for the first time. I just thought it was Japanese before. I haven't seen lyrics though, so I don't exactly know.

Most of it. Not all. I have to be listening though. xD Like even with American bands, I can not pay attention to the lyrics.

I don't understand Japanese but if I really like someone's lyrics (by reading the translation) like Kaya's...for example, I study them so I know what he's singing with every sentence o.o

...so you could say I understand bits ::meev::

I can pick up some vocabulary, but understanding the context of it is beyond me 99.99% of the time. So I picked the last option.

For me, the language is an aesthetic point. I hate listening to most English music because I'm hardwired to analyze poetry and most lyrics are terrible beyond belief. When it's in Japanese, I don't have to worry about hating a song for its stupid lyrics. I can focus on whether or not I enjoy how it sounds. Sometimes I read translations, but most of the time I don't. I like to put my own meaning into the song instead.
