When it's in Japanese, I don't have to worry about hating a song for its stupid lyrics. I can focus on whether or not I enjoy how it sounds. Sometimes I read translations, but most of the time I don't. I like to put my own meaning into the song instead.

Usually I have no idea what they are singing, sometimes I read the lyrics, but not often, but also sometimes I recognize few words. And now I'm going to japanese course, so I hope I will learn something! XD

okay, there are some words I learned from finding translations, like dakishimeru (Gackt's fault >_<) and shiroi hada, bara and kanashimi...(really ..useful words!)

usually I search for translations, because I want to know what the lyrics are about.

really depends on the song, i mean... i understand things like "shiroi hada ni mau akai bara ni kuchizuke o" or "anata wo dakishime nemuritai" but in some songs, like beast of blood, i understand all of the japanese, but others i understand little bits. i've never heard a japanese song that i didn't hear some bits i understood though.

I think the average native speaker, aka. fluent, of a language knows at least 10,000 words. I'm not there yet, so I can't say I'm fluent. But I can watch TV in Japanese and make myself understood in correct, but sometimes "foreigner" Japanese.

So I chose the second option.

Plus I can't even understand Ashlee Simpson's lyrics so...

Third option. Sometimes my ears pick up short phrases or words that I understand, and that's always groovy...

I think it was in 'Transylvania' I heard Gackt say "atarashii sakai" and I literally went " ". So, yeah... that's that. I'm learning Japanese but I don't know it well enough to follow songs like I would in English or Spanish.

I understand little bits and pieces but nothing that would enable me to get the whole meaning of a song, but I also agree with the last part. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean you can't like it. *nod*

I can pick up some vocabulary, but understanding the context of it is beyond me 99.99% of the time. So I picked the last option.

For me, the language is an aesthetic point. I hate listening to most English music because I'm hardwired to analyze poetry and most lyrics are terrible beyond belief. When it's in Japanese, I don't have to worry about hating a song for its stupid lyrics. I can focus on whether or not I enjoy how it sounds. Took the words right out of my mouth...I interpret the lyrics by the songs overall sound, and of course the tone of the vocalist.

I chose the second option, all of my Japanese friends speak fluent Japanese (obviously) and they don't understand a lot of the lyrics, so... Also, the meaning of the song is far past the lyrics. It's easy to understand the words, but the meaning behind the lyrics is much harder, even if the lyrics are in English. I'd choose the second option even if this was about songs in English.
