VI. With a plot, characters and setting worthy of Tolstoy, music on par with the best cinematic scores of the day, killer depth, great, art, and just enough oddball humor to give you a chill while laughing, I find it manages to be emotional without being angsty and enigmatic without needing the type of lame anti-hero characterized by all the RPG heroes who are jerks and don't talk/talk very little.
Partly the reason why I deride VII so much. I don't mind it per se; I played it and enjoyed it, but the level of frenzy to which its fans preached its glory made me think that these kids don't take much to be impressed.
VIII I liked as well (the girly romanticist in me) although my foes who rabidly proclaim VII's ass-kickage over the rest of humanity tended to disagree with me. And then V (class-changing games are fun) and IV (another well-done story/character combo), then X (simply a fresh, exciting, and immensely satisfying game).
